'Cuse rolls past Hobart for third-straight win
For the 30th time in 33 tries, the Kraus-Simmons trophy will spend the year in Syracuse.
Another stout defensive effort and a five-point day from Stephen Rehfuss powered the No. 8 Syracuse men's lacrosse team (6-3, 3-0 ACC) past Hobart (4-6, 1-1 NEC), 11-4 on Tuesday night. The win marked the third-straight victory for Syracuse and it's the 51st-straight time that the Orange earned a win in a game they held their opponent under 10 goals.
Â
The man-up defense provided the spark once again, going another 3-for-3, including a two-man down chance in the second quarter. Syracuse hasn't allowed a man-down goal in nearly 137 minutes of game action, holding their opponents scoreless in their last-11 man-up tries.
Â
On offense, Stephen Rehfuss provided the spark, scoring three times and dishing out a pair of assists in the win. Nate Solomon turned in a second straight four-point performance (2-2), while Jamie Trimboli (2-1) and Matt Lane (1-1) also posted a multi-point days. Dom Madonna made nine saves in net as well, allowing just four goals.
The game began with a Hobart goal from Bryan Hancock. The first time in nine games this season that 'Cuse didn't score first. The lead didn't last long though, as Solomon evened the game up on a difficult catch in front on a feed from Tucker Dordevic just under the nine-minute mark of the first. Trimboli then scored three minutes later on a rocket off a pass from Rehfuss. David Lipka ended the quarter by finding the top corner on an alley dodge to give the Orange a 3-1 lead after one.
The run continued into the second, with Matt Lane, Solomon, Brendan Curry and Bradley Voigt all scoring in succession to break the game open and bring a 7-1 lead into the locker room.
Rehfuss continued the run out of halftime, but the Statesmen scored three-straight to close the third and continue to hang around. Kyle Gramaldi, Ty Yanko and Ryan Acrher provided the spark for Hobart's offense.
Rehfuss put the game to bed in the fourth though, scoring twice more before Trimboli added the exclamation point with 4:38 to go.
Midseason All-American Nick Mellen had another solid day for 'Cuse, holding his matchup Chris Aslanian scoreless. It's the second game in a row Mellen has held his man without a goal after keeping Notre Dame's Ryder Garnsey off the board on Saturday.
Next, Syracuse will play its final road game of the regular season, going to No. 13 Cornell on Tuesday, April 10 in a game slated for 7 p.m.
