Historic finish for the men
Two more individual championships and one of the best team finishes in program history headline the final day of the 2018 ACC Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
Â
Justyn Knight continued his career as one of the most decorated athletes in ACC history, claiming an 11th individual ACC Championship, leading six men into the top-seven of the 5000-meters.
Knight wasn't the only champion on Saturday, as Angelo Goss won the 110-meter hurdles – an event that 'Cuse snagged three of the top-four spots in. The two champs from Saturday joined Noah Affolder (3000-meter steeplechase) and Paige Stoner (3000-meter steeplechase) in claiming individual championships.
The big days in the 5k and hurdles pushed the Orange men to a second-place finish. The mark ties the team's best finish in program history at a conference outdoor meet. 'Cuse also finished second in 1991, 1990, 1989, 1986 and 1985. The Orange won the ACC Indoor Track and Field Championship in 2016.
Â
Syracuse finished with 108 points, eight points behind Florida State, who finished with the team championship. The women collected 21 points, 16 of which came from a strong meet from Stoner and took 12th overall. Miami won the women's title with 117 points.
RESULTS
Behind Knight's 5k, which he pushed to the front with four laps remaining and finished in 13:58.69, Iliass Aouani (14:02.00) took silver, Colin Bennie (14:02.16) earned bronze and Aidan Tooker (14:02.42) finished fourth to complete the super sweep. Affolder (14:07.43) and Philo Germano (14:09.51) finished in sixth and seventh to earn 34 team points in the event. Kevin James (14:29.20) took 14th. Aouani's time was a personal best in the 5k.
Stoner finished third in the 5000-meters, just one night after winning the 3000-meter steeplechase. She crossed the line in 13:14.81, being nudged at the line by Elly Henes of NC State for the title.
Before Knight won the 5k, he also competed in the 1500-meter finals, crossing the line in 3:46.96 for fourth. Simon Smith (3:50.49) finished ninth.
In the 110-meter hurdles, the Orange were led by Angelo Goss' personal-best time for the win. He crossed the line in 13.72 seconds, where he was followed closely by Matt Moore (13.84 seconds). Moore's time was good for second and he also posted a new PR. Richard Floyd closed out the Orange in the top-four with a fourth-place finish in 14.12 second.
The Orange men finished fifth in the 4x100-meter dash in 40.22 seconds, a mark which was a season-best, to kick off the afternoon. The 'Cuse women finished ninth in the event, with a time of 45.53 seconds.
Winston Lee earned another point in the 100-meter dash, taking eighth in a time of 10.79 seconds.
Next, the team will head to the NCAA East Prelims, with 'Cuse looking to qualify runners for the NCAA Championships in June.
