WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Orange are off and running in the NCAA Individual Championships! Junior Gabriela Knutson and sophomore Miranda Ramirez are representing the Orange on the national stage in the singles and doubles tournaments, respectively.Â
Knutson will face Mayar Sherif Ahmed in the round of 16 on Friday, while the doubles pair will play in the round of 16 Friday afternoon.
Fifth-seeded Knutson kicked off the NCAA Singles Championship on Wednesday morning when she defeated Auburn's Jaeda Daniel in a two-set victory, 6-3, 7-5. This is Knutson's second national tournament this season as she advanced to the semifinals in the ITA All-American tournament in the fall.
On day two of the singles tournament, Knutson squared-off against Erin Larner from Northwestern. After taking a 6-4 victory in set one, Knutson fell short 2-6 in the second frame to force a third set. The junior battled to a 6-3 win in the third to take the match and advance to the round of 16.
As a top 16 seed in the Singles Championship, reaching the round of 16 in the tournament, Knutson solidified her place on the ITA All-America team.
In doubles action, Knutson and Ramirez were pitted against the (5-8) duo of Terri Fleming and Jada Hart from UCLA. In a grueling three-set match, the Orange pair traded the lead with the Bruins, taking set one (6-2) before falling in set two (3-6).Â
Syracuse's doubles duo would not go down without a fight, ultimately taking the match on a 10-7 victory in set three to advance to the round of 16.Â
