Sets a new school record in the 3000-meter steeplechase
Paige Stoner finished off a terrific NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships for the Orange in stellar fashion, taking home the bronze medal in the 3000-meter steeplechase.
Â
The Pottsville, Pa. native crushed her own school record, finishing in 9:46.98. Boise State's Allie Ostrander led right in front of Stoner for the duration of the race, with the two gaining a slight lead for the middle portion of the event. Ostrander then pulled away with 800 meters to go, finishing in 9:39.28 for the win. New Mexico's Charlotte Prouse closed late to finish second in 9:45.45.
"I wanted to hang on to Allie as long as I could and make sure that I finished with no regrets," Stoner said. "I know that I hung on as long as I could and did the best that I could."
Â
Stoner's run concludes a stellar year by the Orange junior (senior in cross country), her mark is the best finish by a Syracuse woman at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. She finishes her year with three All-America honors in cross country, indoor and outdoor track. She's also a two-time ACC Champion.
Â
"It's been an incredible year," Stoner said. "I accomplished more that I probably thought I could at this time last year. As each season went on, I was more and more motivated to keep improving. Same thing goes this year. I wish I had cross left, but I have indoor and outdoor left, so next fall will be building for another good spring."
Stoner finishes the 2017-18 year for the Orange on a high note. The Syracuse men picked up 13 points, good for a 24th place finish at the NCAA Championships. Six men earned All-America honors, including two first team (Justyn Knight and Aidan Tooker) and two more ninth-place finishers (Noah Affolder and Colin Bennie) for second team honors.
