Syracuse, N.Y. – Head men's rowing coach Dave Reischman announced several staff changes Tuesday afternoon. Reischman has appointed assistant coach Jason Elefant to take over recruiting responsibilities as the team's new recruiting coordinator. Additionally. Reischman has added former Syracuse oarsman Stephen Hoskins to the staff as an assistant coach.
"I could not be more excited to have Jason and Stephen on our staff," Reischman said. "They are both 'grinders' and bring a tremendous energy to their coaching. We have made a lot of progress in our program over the past two years and I firmly believe we have a coaching staff in place that can keep it moving forward."
Elefant joined the Orange in September 2017 and helped guide Syracuse's third varsity eight to an unbeaten record in the regular season, earning wins over Cornell, Wisconsin, Navy, Boston University, Columbia and Dartmouth. Under his leadership the 3V8+ earned a seventh-place finish at Eastern Sprints and was top-10 at the IRA Championships.
"Coach Elefant did an outstanding job for us during his first year in our program," Reischman said. "He has proven he is ready to take over directing our recruiting efforts. He has really impressed me with his work ethic and he has been very thoughtful about changes he is going to implement in our recruiting approach."
Hoskins most recently served as an assistant coach for the US Rowing's U17 Junior National Team in Sarasota, Fla. While with the U17 squad, he coached and developed athletes through a training camp and racing environment.
"I have been closely watching Stephen's development as a coach over the past three years and I have been impressed with the strides he has made," Reischman added. "When Stephen rowed for us he was very passionate and never afraid to put in the extra work. His approach to coaching is similar. As a former athlete in our program, he understands we value academic and athletic success. I think we are fortunate that the time was right for both of us to bring him back to our program."
As an assistant coach at George Washington from 2016-2018, Hoskins assisted in training, race preparation and team operations for the Colonials' men's rowing program. In 2016, he coached the fourth varsity eight to a sixth-place finish at Eastern Sprints. In 2017, he began coaching the third varsity eight in which the Colonials placed 12th at Eastern Sprints and 15th at the IRA Championship.
This past season, Hoskins coached GW's 3V8+ to a 12th-place finish at Eastern Sprints.
Hoskins began his coaching career as the novice assistant coach at Woodrow Wilson High School in Washington, D.C., during the fall of 2015. He then assisted in coaching the U23 men's team at Thompson Boat Center in Washington, D.C., in the summer of 2016.
"I am honored and humbled to have the opportunity to return to Syracuse University as a coach," Hoskins said. "My time at Syracuse as a student-athlete and member of the rowing team played an integral role in my life. I am looking forward to working with Dave, Jason and our student-athletes to make Syracuse a top program on both the national and international stage. I am thankful to Dave [Reischman] and Syracuse for this opportunity and I am looking forward to getting back on Onondaga Lake, getting down to work and continuing the long tradition of excellence that is Syracuse Rowing. Here come the Orange!"
Hoskins was a member of the men's rowing team at Syracuse from 2011-15. As a senior, he was honored with the team's David D. Godfrey Award.
He continued his rowing career with Thompson Boat Center (TBC) as a member of the U23 Open Men's crew. During his time with TBC, he guided the U23 lightweight 4- to a fifth-place finish at the Royal Canadian Henley and a sixth-place finish in the U23 lightweight 2- in 2015. Additionally, he was a member of TBC's Intermediate 8+ crew that finished fifth at 2014 US Rowing Club Nationals and the Senior 8+ squad that placed sixth.
Hoskins graduated from Syracuse University with a B.S. in civil engineering from the College of Engineering and Computer Science in 2015. He holds a US Rowing Level II Coaching Certification.
