Orange Beat Beavers in Season Opener

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Freshman Ryan Raposo made his collegiate debut a memorable one as he scored the game-winning goal in the 73rd minute to give Syracuse a 2-1 victory at Oregon State on Friday, Aug. 24. The match was the season opener for both teams.
Â
"I'm very proud of the work ethic and commitment of our guys to follow our tactical game plan," head coach Ian McIntyre said. "We started four new guys and another came off the bench and I thought they all did very well. We needed the depth and minutes off the bench as Oregon State is a well-coached team that has very good ball movement. We needed to limit their time on the ball and needed to get around the pitch. I'm proud of how hard we worked and it's a good foundation moving forward."
Â
HOW IT WAS DECIDED
The Orange led 1-0 at halftime but Oregon State tied the game on a penalty kick by Don Tchilao in the 69th minute. It didn't take long for Syracuse to answer. Less than four minutes later, the Orange regained the lead when sophomore Djimon Johnson passed the ball from the right side of the box to Raposo at the back post, who buried his shot in the back of the net for his first career goal.
Â
Raposo wasn't the only player to make an impact in his first official match donning the orange. Graduate student Len Zeugner, a transfer from Boston College, started the play that gave Syracuse the early lead when he played the ball forward to sophomore Tajon Buchanan. Buchanan lobbed the ball over Oregon State goalkeeper Adrian Fernandez, who had come off his line, to junior Severin Soerlie, who headed the ball into the empty net. Soerlie also made his Syracuse debut after transferring from Gardner-Webb.
Â
The Orange tried to add to their lead in the 17th minute when they got off back-to-back shots by Raposo and Buchanan, but Fernandez blocked both shots.
Â
OF NOTE
Syracuse goalkeeper Hendrik Hilpert finished with five saves and recorded his 29th career win, which ranks fourth on Syracuse's career record list.
Â
The victory was also the 80th for McIntyre since taking over the helm of the Orange program in 2010. He has guided Syracuse to a record of 80-56-21 (.576), an ACC Championship, four NCAA Tournament appearances and one trip to the College Cup.
