A LOOK AT THE ORANGE
Syracuse enters Sunday's match with a 1-1-0 record. The Orange opened the season last weekend with a pair of games in Oregon. The Orange defeated Oregon State, 2-1, before losing at Portland, 2-1. Sophomore Tajon Buchanan had a goal and an assist in the two matches and leads the team with three points.
Â
NEWCOMERS MAKE AN IMPACT
Syracuse welcomed 10 newcomers to the team this fall and several made contributions during the opening weekend.
Junior Severin Soerlie, a transfer from Gardner-Webb, scored Syracuse's first goal of the season at Oregon State. Boston College transfer Len Zeugner was credited with an assist on the play. After the Beavers recorded the equalizer, freshman Ryan Raposo tallied the game winner in the 73rd minute for his first collegiate goal. Junior Massimo Ferrin, who came to Syracuse from UAB, posted his first point as a member of the Orange when he assisted on Tajon Buchanan's goal against Portland.
Â
SCOUTING THE PRIDE
Hofstra opened the season last weekend at the Bert and Iris Wolstein Classic at Ohio State. The Pride tied Dayton, 2-2, before losing to the host Buckeyes, 1-0. On Thursday, Hofstra lost at No. 21 Colgate, 2-0, to enter Sunday's game with a 0-2-1 mark.
Â
Junior transfer Peter Meyer and sophomore Matthew Vowinkel scored goals for Hofstra last weekend. Vowinkel was named to the All-Tournament Team. Senior goalkeeper Alex Ashton recorded 12 saves in the two matches and also earned All-Tournament honors. He had three stops at Colgate.
Â
THE SERIES
Syracuse and Hofstra will meet for the third time. The squads have split the two previous meetings. The Pride last visited the SU Soccer Stadium in 2016. Syracuse broke a 0-0 tie with a goal in the 88th minute and Hendrik Hilpert made three saves to record a shutout in the Orange's 1-0 victory.
