SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Highlighted by the dedication of "Connie", Syracuse University's newest shell in the women's rowing fleet, the Orange celebrated 40 Years of Women's Rowing at Syracuse on Saturday, Sept. 15, during the sixth-annual Evening at Ten Eyck.
Women from each of the past four decades were represented at the annual alumni celebration, marking the biggest women's showing in years. Alongside former rowers was the program's inaugural coach, Mark Lyvers, and his successor, Kris Sanford.
The day began with recreational and reunion rows and led into alumni races including a mixed men's and women's boat that placed second overall.
The dedication of "Connie" to the women's rowing program by Marcia Furlonge '97 in memory of her mother, the shell's namesake, was a marquee moment.
During the dedication, Furlonge's message was clear.
"Always show gratitude."
She elaborated to a tear-filled crowd what her mother Connie, who lost her battle to breast cancer, meant to her. The inside of "Connie" reads, "You will be forever in our hearts" accented with a pink ribbon.
"Not everyone has the opportunity to be able to do what we do," Furlonge added. "Be grateful for the opportunity that you have and what you can do."
Newly appointed head coach Luke McGee shared his thoughts about how it is important to have the current student-athletes learn from and compete for the women that came through the Ten Eyck Memorial Boathouse before them.
The night was capped by the Syracuse Alumni Rowing Association (SARA) Hall of Fame induction which saw the men's 1978 IRA Championship squad, David Townsley '78 and Katherine Sibley, the founder of Syracuse University's Department of Physical Education for Women in 1918, become forever enshrined in Syracuse Rowing history.
