BLACKSBURG, Va. – No. 21 Virginia Tech scored in the 108th minute to record a 1-0 victory against Syracuse in men's soccer action in Blacksburg, Va. on Friday, Sept. 28.
Â
"It's difficult when your team gives everything physically and emotionally and get nothing out of the game," Syracuse head coach Ian McIntyre said. "I couldn't have asked for more from them. But congratulations to Virginia Tech on finding a way to score that goal."
Â
HOW IT WAS DECIDED
The winning play started when Camron Lennon played the ball into the box from the right side. The pass went off a Syracuse defender to Nico Quashie, who put his shot in the back of the net for the game winner.
Â
The Orange (3-4-1, 0-3-0) created scoring chances throughout the game, getting off 14 shots in the second half. But it was the Hokies (6-2-2, 1-2-1) that were the more dangerous team in overtime. Virginia Tech registered three shots in the first extra session. Syracuse goalkeeper Hendrik Hilpert stopped Virginia Tech's first shot of the second overtime before Quashie scored with 2:04 left in the period.
Â
"We had half-chances that we just didn't take," McIntyre said. "I thought we were outstanding in the second half. We pushed forward and going into overtime we knew we would be disappointed to get nothing out of this game."
Â
OF NOTE
Syracuse finished with 18 shots and seven corner kicks to 16 shots and two corner kicks for Virginia Tech. Hilpert finished with six saves.
Â
UP NEXT
Syracuse has a short turnaround as it returns to action on Monday, Oct. 1 at Akron at 7 p.m.
