SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Syracuse women's tennis team enters the 2019 season as the No. 24th-ranked squad in the country, Oracle and the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) announced Wednesday, Jan. 9.
Syracuse is one of seven Atlantic Coast Conference teams - the most for any conference in the country - to crack the Oracle/ITA's first Top-25 Poll of the season. North Carolina (No. 3), Duke (No. 4), Georgia Tech (No. 14), Florida State (No. 15), Miami (No. 17) and Virginia (No. 23) are the ACC's other representatives.
The Orange, which concluded their previous campaign ranked No. 31, are coming off one of the most impressive seasons in program history. After beginning the year unranked, Syracuse finished 2018 with a 17-8 record and earned a season-best No. 25 ranking – just the second time in program history that the Orange had ever cracked the Oracle/ITA Top-25 Poll.
During the 2018 campaign, head coach Younes Limam oversaw the doubles pair of Gabriela Knutson and Miranda Ramirez's rise to a No. 8 ranking and All-America status, helping them become the first Orange student-athletes to earn the honor since Erica O'Neill in 1995. Knutson also clinched All-America status in singles, finishing the season with a 21-5 singles record and No. 8 ranking.
Three Orange three student-athletes were ranked in the Oracle/ITA's most recent singles and doubles rankings, which came out in November 2018. Knutson and sophomore Sofya Golubovskaya are ranked No. 43 and No. 92, respectively, in singles to begin the year, while the duo of Golubovskaya and Sofya Treshcheva are ranked No. 24 in doubles.
Syracuse opens the 2019 season on Saturday, Jan. 19, when the Orange host Brown at 11 a.m. at Drumlins. Admission to all Syracuse tennis home matches is free.
