PITTSBURGH, Pa. - Forward Digna Strautmane's season-high 22 points, coupled with a dominant second-half defensive effort by the Orange, carried the No.12-ranked Syracuse women's basketball team (15-2, 4-0 ACC) to a convincing 82-50 road win over Pittsburgh (9-9, 0-4 ACC) on Thursday night.
It's the Orange's ninth straight win, as well as their fourth consecutive victory in Atlantic Coast Conference play.
Strautmane had the hot hand all night long. Her fifth straight game in double digits came via a 7-of-9 shooting performance, which included four made three-pointers.
The native of Latvia scored 18 points over the second and third quarters, pacing the Orange as they pulled away from the Panthers in the second half. Syracuse outscored Pitt 44-18 across the final two quarters of the game.
Along with Strautmane's offense, Syracuse's second-half surge was spurred by its defensive effort. After allowing the Panthers to keep pace offensively in the first half, the Orange's defense flipped the script after the break.
Up 38-32 at the start of the second half, Syracuse intensified its pressure. The effort resulted in eight steals and caused Pitt to commit 10 turnovers in the game's final 20 minutes.
The Panthers could not buy a basket, either. Pitt shot 20 percent and 23.1 percent from the field in the third and fourth quarters, respectively, a significant drop-off from its first-half performance.
As Pitt faltered, the Orange capitalized. Syracuse's 38-32 halftime advantage would quickly turn into a 26-point lead, as the Orange held the Panthers to eight third-quarter points. The Orange lead grew to as much as 36 with three minutes left to play in regulation.
Strautmane's big night was supported by a complete performance from fellow forward Maeva Djaldi-Tabdi. Djaldi-Tabdi scored 16 points (7-of-7 from the floor) and reeled in a team-high eight rebounds.
Guard Tiana Mangakahia, meanwhile, followed up her triple-double against UNC with a 14-point, 8-assist effort. Guard Kiara Lewis came off the bench and poured in 11 points, while guard Gabrielle Cooper had three steals and matched Djaldi-Tabdi's eight rebounds.
The Orange next head to Atlanta to play Georgia Tech. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 20, and the game will air on ACC Network Extra.
