#24 'Cuse Sweeps Brown to Earn Season-Opening Victory

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The 24th-ranked Syracuse women's tennis team beat Brown, 7-0, on Saturday at Drumlins Country Club. The Orange swept Brown in doubles to win the first point of the match. Senior Dina Hegab and junior Guzal Yusupova defeated Brown's Alessandra Bianco and Juliana Simon, 6-4, to open the scoring. Syracuse's first doubles team of senior Gabriela Knutson and Miranda Ramirez, who are ranked eighth nationally, scored a 7-5 victory against Devon Jack and Courtney Kowalsky and the Orange second doubles team of Sofya Golubovskaya and Sofya Treshcheva beat Brown's Julia Newman and Sophie Reddy, 7-6.

"This is a great start to our season," said head coach Younes Limam. "We came out excited and ready to play, which is something we talked about throughout the week. It is important for us to get this first win under our belt."

Syracuse will host Columbia on Sunday, January 20 at 11 am at Drumlins Country Club. Admission and parking are free of charge.

Yusupova gave the Orange their first singles point with a 6-3, 6-0 victory against Newman in the fourth doubles match. Ramirez put Syracuse ahead, 3-0, with a 6-2, 6-2 victory against Reddy at third singles. Then Hegab clinched the victory for Syracuse with a 6-2, 6-3 victory against Ryan Peus at fifth singles. Treshcheva beat Bianco, 7-6 (7-5 tiebreaker), 6-2 in sixth singles, followed by Knutson, who ranks eighth in the country, defeating Jack, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 for the victory at No. 1 singles. Golubovskaya closed the match with a win against Taylor Cosme in second singles, 6-4, 3-6, 12-10, to give Syracuse the 7-0 victory.

"We have to come out tomorrow ready to play against Columbia," Limam said. "They are a strong team that usually finishes near the top of their league. It will be important to follow up today's win with a good match tomorrow."
