
#24 Orange Open 2019 Season Against Brown, Columbia

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse women's tennis is officially back.
The No. 24th-ranked Syracuse women's tennis team opens the 2019 season at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, hosting Brown inside Drumlins Country Club. The Orange then welcome in another Ivy League opponent in Columbia at 11 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 20.
Both matches will air on ACC Network Extra.

SCOUTING THE BEARS
This will be the season-opening match for Brown, as well. The Bears are led by head coach Lucie Schmidhauser, who was promoted to head coach in August 2018 after serving as the program's assistant coach.
Freshman Julia Newman is Brown's top-ranked singles player, ranking No. 114 in the country per the ITA poll.
SCOUTING THE LIONS
Columbia opens its season against Syracuse Sunday. The Lions' lineup is headlined by sophomores Christie Wan and Jennifer Kerr, who who earned All-Ivy League honors in 2018.
The Lions went 12-8, including a 4-3 mark in Ivy League play, last season.
WHAT'S NEW WITH THE ORANGE
The Orange, who start the season ranked No. 24 in the country, are powered by nationally-ranked junior Gabriela Knutson and sophomore Sofya Golubovskaya in singles. They are ranked No. 43 and No. 92, respectively, in singles to begin the year.
Golubovskaya went 6-3 in singles action during the fall, while Knutson had a 5-4 record.
The duo of Golubovskaya and freshman Sofya Treshcheva, meanwhile, are ranked No. 24 in doubles according to the Oracle/Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) most recent polls, which came out in November 2018.
Syracuse has two newcomers on this year's roster in Treshcheva and junior Guzal Yusupova. Treshcheva got off to a strong start in the fall, beginning her Syracuse career with a 18-6 overall record.
Yusupova, meanwhile, came to Syracuse after spending her first two seasons at Washington State. She had the Orange's best overall record in the fall, finishing 22-7 overall with 11 of those wins coming singles matches.

WHAT LIES AHEAD
The Orange head to Oxford, Miss., to compete in the ITA Kick-Off Weekend. Syracuse plays Michigan at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 26 and either Ole Miss or Purdue Sunday.
