SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Junior forward Savannah Rennie's first goal of the season gave Syracuse an early first-period lead, but Penn State scored the equalizer a few minutes later, and neither team would score again. The Orange and the Nittany Lions battled to a 1-1 overtime tie Saturday afternoon inside Tennity Ice Pavilion.
The Orange move to 6-17-2 overall and 6-5-1 in College Hockey America play with the tie. Syracuse's all-time record against Penn State now stands at 24-1-4.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The teams spent most of the game knotted up at one after a pair of first-period goals.
Syracuse got on the board first with Rennie's goal. Off an assist from sophomore forward Emma Polaski, Rennie slammed a puck home from the blue line, giving Syracuse a 1-0 lead eight minutes into the game.
Penn State responded quickly, however, with a goal of its own. Forward Loli Fidler fired a shot from the bottom of the left circle and scored the equalizer midway through the first period.
After that, neither team was able to find twine. Syracuse senior goaltender Maddi Welch had 23 saves on the afternoon, and she received help from the Orange defense, which blocked 25 shots.
Penn State's Jenna Brenneman was a wall in front of the Penn State net as well, recording 30 saves in the game.
OF NOTE
Welch had 56 saves between the two games, ending the weekend with a .966 save percentage against the Nittany Lions in the series.
Polaski had her fifth assist of the season. Her 14 points are tied for second most on the Orange with freshman forward Lauren Bellefontaine.
Syracuse's 25 blocked shots are its second-most total shots of the year. Sophomore defenseman Jessica DiGirolamo blocked seven to lead the team.
UP NEXT
Syracuse has a short break before its back on the ice. No. 6 Cornell visits the Orange inside Tennity Ice Pavilion next Tuesday, Jan. 29. The puck drops in the non-conference game at 7 p.m.
