SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse women's hockey is back in action after a lengthy winter break.
The Orange open the 2019 portion of their regular season on the road against RPI on Tuesday, Jan. 8. The puck drops at 4 p.m. inside Houston Field House in Troy, N.Y.
ABOUT THE SERIES
The Orange are 5-2-1 all-time against the Engineers. Syracuse has won three of the previous four meetings and owns a 3-1-0 record on the road against RPI.
The last two contests between the two programs came in November of 2012. Playing on its home ice inside Tennity Ice Pavilion, Syracuse won both games against RPI by a score of 4-0.
SCOUTING THE ENGINEERS
The game also marks RPI's return to the ice after a month-long hiatus. The Engineers enter Tuesday with a 6-9-4 overall record, including a 4-4-0 mark in Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) play.
RPI is led by the junior duo of forwards Blake Orosz and Sabrina Repaci, who each have 13 points through 19 games played this season. Orosz paces the Engineers offense with her team-high six goals, while Repaci leads the team in assists with nine.
Goaltender Lovisa Selander has started 16-of-19 games for RPI this season and has been impressive between the pipe, posting a 1.94 GAA, .944 save percentage and two shutouts. Her save percentage ranks fifth best in the nation.
As a team, RPI has one of the country's best defenses. The Engineers allow 2.05 goals per game, which ranks 18th best in the NCAA, and are superb on the penalty kill (87.5 percent - 11th best in the NCAA).
WHAT'S NEW WITH THE ORANGE
Syracuse enjoyed a lengthy winter break before reconvening at the end of December for a three-game exhibition series in Montreal. The Orange went undefeated at the Theresa Humes Invitational, outscoring their opponents - Nipissing, St. FX and host Concordia - by a margin of 17-3.
Prior to the break, the Orange closed out the 2018 portion of the regular season with back-to-back losses in a home-and-home series with No. 10 Colgate. Syracuse lost 5-2 at home to the Raiders on Thursday, Dec. 6 before losing 4-2 on Saturday, Dec. 8 in Hamilton, N.Y.
The Orange enter Tuesday's contest in the midst of an eight-game losing streak. Syracuse's last regular-season win came against Penn State on Nov. 4, 2018.
WHAT LIES AHEAD
The Orange jump back into conference play after Tuesday's contest at RPI. Syracuse next makes its way to Rochester, N.Y. to take on CHA opponent RIT at 6 p.m. Friday, Jan. 11,.
