Orange Shut Out Huskies

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Junior Sondre Norheim scored on a header in the 55th minute for the only goal Syracuse would need in a 1-0 win against Connecticut in the men's soccer squad's final non-conference match of the season. The victory at the SU Soccer Stadium was the second in a row for the Orange and improved their record to 5-3-4.
Â
"I thought we were very good tonight," Syracuse head coach Ian McIntyre said. "We worked exceptionally hard. We talked to the group about trying to suffocate them and stop service going in to their front guys and I thought (our team) did a terrific job on that."
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Orange were the more dangerous team from the opening whistle. Syracuse outshot Connecticut (4-8-1), 7-1, in the first half but couldn't find the back of the net.
Â
Syracuse earned a corner kick in the 49th minute, but junior Dylan McDonald's header went just wide to keep the score at 0-0. After goalkeeper Christian Miesch made a stop on Thomas Decottignies' shot to keep the Huskies off the scoreboard, Syracuse earned another corner on the other end and this time the Orange took advantage of the opportunity. Junior Massimo Ferrin served the ball into the box where Norheim headed the ball into the back of the net in the 55th minute for the game's only goal.
Â
OF NOTE
It marked the second consecutive game that Ferrin and Norheim connected on a set play. Norheim also scored on a header off a free kick from Ferrin in Syracuse's upset of No. 18 North Carolina on Saturday. Ferrin leads the team with a career-high five assists.
Â
The Orange outshot Connecticut, 12-3, and earned 10 corner kicks to one for the Huskies. Miesch needed to make just one save in his third shutout of the season.
Â
UP NEXT
Syracuse returns to ACC play on Friday, Oct. 19 when it hosts No. 8 Clemson at the SU Soccer Stadium. The game will be streamed on ACC Network Extra. Admission and parking are free.
