Â
"First you give credit to Clemson," Syracuse head coach Ian McIntyre said. "I think they are the best team in our conference right now. They have dynamic attacking players. They are exciting and they are a real handful. But we had a bad night at the office and we got punished. If you would have told me that we would score four goals against this Clemson team at home – I would have thought we would have won the game. Unfortunately, we didn't."
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Clemson (11-1-1, 4-1-1) jumped out to an early lead, scoring three goals in the first 30 minutes. Syracuse (5-4-4, 1-2-2) got on the scoreboard with five seconds remaining in the first half when senior Nyal Higgins recorded his first goal as a member of the Orange on a header off a corner kick by senior Severin Soerlie.
Â
The Tigers scored twice in the first 15 minutes of the second half to take their largest lead of the game at 5-1. Syracuse's comeback attempt started in the 69th minute when sophomore Ryan Raposo got by two defenders and put his shot in the back of the net for his team-leading eighth goal of the year. The Orange pulled to within two, 5-3, in the 81st minute on Sondre Norheim's header on a corner kick by senior Massimo Ferrin.
Â
Clemson answered in the 82nd minute to extend its lead back to three, but Norheim and Ferrin connected again on a corner kick in the 83rd minute to make the score 6-4. That was as close as the Orange could get as Robbie Robinson netted his third goal of the night in the 86th minute for the 7-4 final. Robinson finished with seven points, which is the highest total for an opposing player in SU Soccer Stadium history.
Â
OF NOTE
The loss was Syracuse's first at home this season and snapped the Orange's two-game winning streak. The 'Cuse is 3-1-4 on its home pitch with two home contests remaining in the regular season.
Â
Norheim and Ferrin have now connected on at least one set piece in each of the last three games. All four of Norheim's goals this season have come during that stretch. He ranks second on the team in goals and third in points. Ferrin has five assists in the last three games, giving him a team-high seven this season.
Â
Syracuse held a 17-15 advantage in shots, and earned 12 corner kicks to four for the Tigers. Clemson recorded seven goals, nine assists and 23 points in the match. All three totals are the most for an opposing team at the SU Soccer Stadium.
Â
UP NEXT
Syracuse has just two home games remaining on the regular-season schedule. The Orange host SUNY Morrisville on Tuesday at 4 p.m. at the SU Soccer Stadium. Admission and parking are free.
