PRINCETON, N.J. — Syracuse closed out its series with No. 6 Princeton with a 3-0 loss at Hobey Baker Rink in Princeton, N.J. Saturday afternoon. The contest was another close game for Syracuse as both teams were almost even in shots (55-56), shots on goal (28-28), penalties (4-4), and face offs (30-29). The Orange return to the ice Tuesday when they play Union in Schenectady, N.Y.
Â
" It was tough falling behind 2-0 in the first, but we settled down and played very inspired the rest of the way," head coach Paul Flanagan said. "We've had a tough stretch of games the past month and need to stay positive going into this week with three games in five days."
How it happened
The Tigers jumped on the board just 73 seconds into the game thanks to Maggie Connors connecting high-to-low with Carly Bullock. Bullock backhanded one left of junior goalie Allison Small to put the Tigers up 1-0. Princeton then added an insurance power-play goal in the 11th minute when Bullock settled a rebound and shot it to the same spot on Small, making it 2-0 Tigers.
Â
Syracuse dug in its heels in the second period and began to build a counter attack, but the Tigers didn't back off from their assault. The Orange rifled off 19 shots, with 11 of their chances on goal. Princeton put up 20 shots (11 on goal) themselves, but both Small and Tigers netminder Stephanie Neatby closed their respective doors.
Â
Princeton added it's third goal of the day six minutes into the third period when Claire Thompson wristed-in a shorthander from the top of the left circle, sealing Syracuse's fate. The Orange would go on to take 14 shots, but they were unable to find the back of the net.
