SCHENECTADY, N.Y. — Five goals and some excellent goalkeeping led to Syracuse claiming its first win of the season Tuesday night in Schenectady, N.Y. The Orange (1-9) shut out intrastate foe Union (0-6-1), 5-0, in Messa Rink, with four different skaters scoring on the night. Two lamp-lighters came from junior defender Jessica DiGirolamo, and sophomore Abby Moloughney was all about the apples as she assisted in all but one goal. Between the pipes, senior goalkeeper Ady Cohen recorded her second career shutout.
How it Happened
Syracuse opened scoring 13 minutes into the first period when redshirt senior captain Lindsay Eastwood took a rip from the top of the left circle, the puck ricocheting off a defender and past Union goalkeeper Amelia Murray. The goal was Eastwood's third of the year. The Orange sounded the horn just two minutes later when DiGirolamo skated up the right-side boards and sniped one just under the crossbar, recording her second of the year and giving Syracuse a healthy 2-0 lead heading into the first intermission.
'Cuse kept the pressure on in the second period and added its final three goals to edge out the Dutchwomen. DiGirolamo got things going with an eighth-minute laser from the point. Freshman Anna Leschyshyn then netted her second of the year from the right side of the goal in the 18th minute, her goal a wide-open chance that was made possible after she caught a rebounded shot from Madison Beishuizen. The Orange put a final stamp on the day just 46 seconds later when senior Savannah Rennie chased down a loose puck in the crease and backhanded in her second of the season.
From there, it was all Cohen for the third period. The senior continued to shut the door on Union, making eight saves to bring her total on the night to 20. Tuesday's shutout was Cohen's first since Feb. 9, 2019 when she helped the Orange walk away with a 4-0 victory over Mercyhurst in Erie, Pa.
Syracuse outshot Union 69-35, with 37 of those chances on goal. Sophomore center Lauren Bellefontaine paced both sides in faceoff wins, winning 12 of Syracuse's 25.
