CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Syracuse's second-half comeback came up just short in a 2-1 setback at No. 4 Virginia in the quarterfinals of the ACC Tournament on Sunday, Nov. 10. The Orange cut the lead in half in the 70th minute but couldn't score the equalizer.
Â
"It's always difficult to come up a little bit short against an excellent Virginia team," Syracuse head coach Ian McIntyre said. "They are an excellent team and this is a difficult place to compete. I couldn't be more proud of the guys for how hard they worked and how they kept pushing to the final whistle. We have an emotionally and physically exhausted team and they left it all out on the field today."
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Virginia (15-1-1) was the more dangerous team early and took the lead in the 11th minute when Joe Bell converted on penalty kick attempt. The Cavaliers added to the advantage in the 18th minute. Daryl Dike brought the ball down the right side and slid a pass to Nathaniel Crofts in the box, who put his shot in the back of the net.
Â
The Orange (7-6-5) were able to apply pressure and earned two corner kicks and got off five shots, but only one was on goal as the Cavaliers took a 2-0 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Â
Syracuse was more organized in the second half and cut the lead in half in the 70th minute on a set piece. Sophomore Ryan Raposo served the ball into the box on a corner kick where senior John-Austin Ricks flicked it to the far post to freshman Luther Archimede. Archimede knocked the ball into the open net for his third goal of the year and just the sixth the Cavaliers have allowed in 17 matches this season.
Â
The Orange continued to apply pressure and had their best scoring chance with just less than 10 minutes remaining. Freshman Noah Singelmann brought the ball down the left side and crossed the ball into the box. Virginia defender Robin Afamefuna just got a touch on the pass, which prevented it from getting to Brian Hawkins, who was making a run to goal. Syracuse continued to control possession but couldn't take advantage of its opportunities.
Â
OF NOTE
Virginia held a slight advantage in shots, 11-9, while both teams had four corner kicks. Sophomore goalkeeper Christian Miesch made three saves for the Orange.
Â
UP NEXT
Syracuse will await the announcement of the NCAA Tournament pairings to see if its season continues. The bracket will be announced on Monday, Nov. 18. The Orange were No. 28 in the latest RPI released on Nov. 3.
