Syracuse Dominates Houston, Opens Canada Trip with 87-62 Victory

VICTORIA, B.C. -Â Syracuse opened the the Greater Victorian Invitational presented by the City of Langford with a dominating 87-62 victory over Houston Thursday night in Victoria, B.C. The Orange saw five players hit the double-digit scoring mark in Gabrielle Cooper, Amaya Finklea-Guity, Kiara Lewis, Emily Engstler and Maeva Djaldi-Tabdi. Engstler led the team with her third double-double of the year, and 'Cuse shot an impressive 52 percent from the field. The Orange are back in action Friday against #3 Stanford at 7:30 p.m. ET.Â

Of note:
- Five Orange scored in the double-digits on the night. Lewis led the pack with 16, followed by Djaldi-Tabdi (16), Cooper (14), Engstler (14) and Finklea-Guity (11).
- Engstler recorded her third double-double of the year as she added 15 rebounds to her 14 points. This was the third game she's led the team in rebounds.
- This is the first time this season that the Orange have had five players score in double-digits.
- Djaldi-Tabdi put up 16 points for the second consecutive game. She did so against No. 1 Oregon last Sunday in The Dome when she recorded the second double-double of her career.
- This is both Engstler and Cooper's fourth double-digit game of the year.
How it happened
- Houston and Syracuse opened neck-and-neck, the score sitting 26-23 Syracuse after the first quarter. Lewis and Djaldi-Tabdi both started hot, Lewis going 3-4 from inside the arc while recording five rebounds and a free throw, and Djaldi-Tabdi recording three jumpers and two free throws in the first 10 minutes.
- The close battle continued into the second with neither team managing to pull away by more than three points at a time until the final two minutes when Syracuse put up six unanswered points to take a 45-39 lead into the locker room. Emily Engstler led the Orange in scoring after 20 minutes of play, the sophomore's nine points coming courtesy of a pair of treys, a jumper, and a free throw.
- Syracuse began to pull away in the third period thanks to a total team effort that resulted in the Orange outshooting the Cougars 21-14 to take a comfortable 68-53 lead into the final stanza.
- The fourth was all Syracuse. The Orange opened the quarter on a 11-3 run, their points coming from two layups and back-to-back-to-back treys to go up 80-56. Houston tried to keep the pressure on but their efforts weren't enough as 'Cuse cruised to a 87-62Â victory.
