SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse women's lacrosse will take on all four national semifinalists from last year, including defending national champion Maryland, this season. The 2020 schedule includes eight teams that participated in last season's NCAA Tournament.
"Once again we'll face one of the toughest schedules in the nation," said head coach Gary Gait. "If you want to be the best, you have to play the best. Hopefully we'll be battle tested come NCAA Tournament time."
Syracuse, which was ranked No. 2 in the preseason Nike/US Lacrosse poll, will face the other top four teams in the poll and six of the top 11. That group includes No. 1 North Carolina, No. 3 Maryland, No. 4 Northwestern, No. 5 Boston College, No. 7 Virginia and No. 11 Notre Dame.
The Orange open the season on Friday, Feb. 7 against Canisius in the Carrier Dome at 3 p.m. Syracuse hosts Stony Brook (Feb. 12), Albany (Feb. 15) and Binghamton (Feb. 18) before going on the road for the first time to face Northwestern (Feb. 22) in a rematch of last year's NCAA Tournament quarterfinal.
The 'Cuse returns home to host Colgate on Feb. 25 and defending national champion Maryland on Feb. 28. The game against the Terrapins will be final game in the Dome for the Orange before the building closes for the completion of the enhancements for the new stadium experience. The $118 million dollar renovation will debut in the fall of 2020.
Syracuse will play nine of its final 10 regular-season contests on the road. The Orange take on four straight ACC opponents, starting with Virginia Tech at the Crown Lacrosse Classic in Charlotte, N.C. on March 8. The 'Cuse visits Virginia on March 12 before taking on Louisville in Bradenton, Fla. on March 21. The Orange then travel to South Bend, Ind. to take on Notre Dame on March 28.
The April schedule starts with contests at Loyola (Apr. 1) and against Duke (Apr. 4) in Dallas before Syracuse returns home to host ACC rival North Carolina on Apr. 11. The Orange go back on the road to face Cornell (Apr. 14) and Boston College (Apr. 18).
The 2020 ACC Tournament will take place April 22, 24 and 26 at North Carolina in Chapel Hill. Syracuse concludes the regular season against UMass in Albany on May 2.
The Orange recorded a 16-5 record last season and earned the No. 5 seed in the NCAA Tournament. Syracuse advanced to the quarterfinals for the sixth time in eight years.
