PHOENIX, ARIZ. – A walk-off single in the bottom of the eighth by Gabby Teran scored the winning run for Syracuse (1-3) Saturday night as the Orange defeated Grand Canyon (2-3) for their first win of the 2019 season.
The Orange's victory came just hours after a tough five-inning, 9-1, loss to No. 4 Oklahoma (4-0) earlier in the day. Alexa Romero (1-1) started both games in the circle for 'Cuse, including tossing all eight innings against the Lopes. Romero held Grand Canyon to two runs on four hits after giving up two runs (one unearned) to Oklahoma.
GAME 1 VS. OKLAHOMA
Oklahoma put themselves on the board early with a run in the first. The Sooners opened the inning with a walk before Jocelyn Alo singled to left field and advanced to second on a throwing error. A sac fly manufactured the run and a 1-0 lead for OU. Reagan Rogers hit the third home run of her career, and her second on the day, moving the Sooners to a 2-0 lead.
Lailoni Mayfield hit a ball deep to right field for the third triple of her career and scored one batter later on a Sooner error. The run cut Oklahoma's lead in half, 2-1. Despite OU opening the third with back-to-back singles, the pitching of Miranda Hearn kept them off the scoreboard.
The Orange were unable to tame Oklahoma's potent offense as the Sooners scored seven runs on eight hits in the fourth inning for the run-rule victory.
GAME 2 VS. GRAND CANYON
Syracuse bounced back quickly in its second game of the day as freshman Alexis Kaiser hit a two-run bomb to left field in the first inning. The home run also scored Bryce Holmgren who drew a walk one at bat prior.
Grand Canyon quickly put themselves back in the ballgame, opening the second inning with back-to-back singles. A third single down the left field line scored both runs for the Lopes, tying the game 2-2. Both Romero and GCU's Alexa Coons pitched lights out through the next six innings, neither giving up a hit or run.
The international tie break rule was in effect, meaning each team placed a runner on second base to open the eighth inning. Grand Canyon's runner moved to third on a fly out to right field before Shea Smith drew a walk, putting runners on the corners. A fly out, wrangled in by Toni Martin in left field, kept the Lopes off the board. Mayfield set up the winning run with a sac bunt that moved base runner, Logan Paul, to third.
OF NOTE
Syracuse travels to Durham, N.C. next weekend, Feb. 15-17, for four games against Penn State and Indiana as a part of the ACC/BIG10 Challenge.
