ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Syracuse women's ice hockey team (8-19-2, 8-6-1 CHA) did everything it could to get a puck past RIT goaltender Terra Lanteigne, but the Tigers (11-14-4, 7-8-0 CHA) stood strong and walked away with a 1-0 win Friday night inside the Gene Polisseni Center.
An early second-period goal on a breakaway gave RIT the only goal it would need, putting the Tigers up 1-0 only 49 seconds into the second period.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Syracuse controlled a majority of the offensive-zone time in the first period, racking up 28 shot attempts and 15 shots on goal. The Orange had two opportunities on the power play and logged six shots on goal, but none of the shots could find twine to get Syracuse on the board. The first period ended with both teams knotted at zero.
Rochester used the intermission to refocus and came out of the gates shooting in the second. 49 seconds into the period, forward Mallory Rushton got a leading pass behind the Syracuse defense, putting her one-on-one against goaltender Ady Cohen. Rushton dangled the puck and fired past Cohen, beating her on the glove side to put RIT up 1-0.
Syracuse had some opportunities in the second, including a shot by forward Brooke Avery that struck iron. None of the Orange's 17 second-period shots, however, found the back of the net. At the end of the second period, RIT still led 1-0.
RIT had a golden opportunity with the puck in front of the net to extend its lead in the third, but Cohen stuck her leg out to make the save, keeping the score at 1-0 with 10:35 left in regulation. The Orange wouldn't be able to find the equalizer in the third, though, with Lanteigne making eight of her 40 total saves to keep the Orange off the board.
OF NOTE
Cohen continued her hot streak in the net, making 25 saves and posting a .962 save percentage on the night. Over her last two games, including a shutout against Mercyhurst on Feb. 9, Cohen has made 46 saves and improved her save percentage to .900.
Syracuse put 40 shots on net in the game. In each of the last three games against RIT, Syracuse has put up more than 40 shots on the opposing goaltender.
Defenseman Allie Munroe and forward Emma Polaski challenged Lanteigne all night. The duo combined for 29 shot attempts, putting 12 on goal.
WHAT LIES AHEAD
Syracuse returns to Tennity Ice Pavilion tomorrow - Saturday, Feb. 16 - finish out the season series against RIT. The puck drops at 7 p.m.
