Orange Dominate Danes

Orange cruise past Albany in every fashion, winning 13-5
The Syracuse lacrosse team (1-1) was dominant in every facet against No. 14 UAlbany (0-1), bouncing back in impressive fashion from their season-opening loss, with a 13-5 win over No. 14 Albany.
Bradley Voigt's career day, plus a team defensive effort drove the Orange production, avenging a 15-3 loss to the Great Danes from last season. Tyson Bomberry held Albany's Tehoka Nanticoke, who tallied nearly 4.5 points per game last year to just two goals, while Nick Mellen and Marcus Cunningham worked to hold the other two Great Dane attackmen to just one assist combined.
Â
The Orange collected 44 ground balls to Albany's 24 – a point of emphasis in the week – while Drake Porter was stellar in cage, making 12 saves and allowing just five goals. Brendan Curry (2-3), Jamie Trimboli (1-1) and Pat Carlin (1-1) also contributed multi-point efforts for the Orange.
"I thought we did a much better job than we did last week," said Head Coach John Desko. "We learned a lot from the film, saw the things we weren't doing well and really wanted to focus on ground balls after last week. It was great to see the stats and see a 44-24 lead in that category and it shows a lot of effort on our guys' part. I thought we played a lot smarter and defensively executed a good game play."
Syracuse got on the board early in the first, with Trimboli finding the back of the net for the first time this season. Albany would respond just as quickly, tying the game at 1-1 with 13:08 left in the first. The teams traded the next two goals, including one each on the man-up, to get the game tied at 3-3 with 4:26 left in the opening frame.
From that point forward it was all 'Cuse, scoring once more before the end of the first and four more times in the second to open a five-goal lead.
Four straight goals, including a pair from Voigt, gave Syracuse an 8-3 lead with 5:11 left in the half. The Great Danes would not be shut out in the quarter, however, as Nanticoke netted his second goal of the game to send the teams into the locker room with Syracuse up 8-4.
Â
Defenses prevailed for most of the third period, until Voigt snapped the nearly 15-minute scoring drought with a point-blank goal. The goal extended SU's lead to 9-4 with 2:47 left in the third.
Albany found its way back onto the scoresheet early in the fourth. With 13:25 left in the game, the Great Dane's Noah Taylor slipped a shot past SU junior goalkeeper Drake Porter. That's all the Danes would get in the game though, as Syracuse seized the momentum again on two goals from Curry and goals from Voigt and Basil Aburn.
Syracuse is back in action at home on Sunday, Feb. 24 when Army travels to the Dome. The opening faceoff is at 4 p.m. on ACC Network Extra.
Season tickets remain the best value to watch the Orange this season. At just $65 for adults and $35 for youth (12 and under) fans can purchase season tickets. Season tickets are in the reserved section behind the team's bench and come with other benefits during the season which are exclusive to season ticket holders.
Individual game tickets are also available at $15 for adults and $10 for youth.
GAME NOTES: Syracuse has won 53-straight when holding opponents to less than ten goals … The Orange won its 240th game inside the Carrier Dome … Voigt's six goals was the most goals scored by an SU player since Dylan Donahue scored seven against Notre Dame in 2015 … Basil Aburn got his first career goal against the Great Danes … Tyson Bomberry picked up a career-high seven ground balls … Nate Solomon has a four-game goal scoring streak, which started last season against Colgate (5/5) … Brendan Curry's five points were also a career-high.
