GAINESVILLE, FLA. – A five-inning, complete game shutout from sophomore Sophie Dandola led Syracuse (4-8) to an 8-0 victory over Florida A&M (1-10) Saturday evening to close out the second day of the Bubly Invitational. The Orange opened the day with an 8-0 loss to No. 3 Florida (16-0).
Dandola (3-2) dished out a season-high seven strikeouts while allowing just two hits and no walks. It was the first shutout of the season for the Orange and the fewest hits allowed since Apr.11, 2018. She faced 17 batters in the five innings, just two over the minimum.
The game marked the third time this season the Orange have recorded nine hits, and the second time this weekend after also doing so yesterday in a 5-3 win over Illinois State.
GAME 1 VS. FLORIDA
Gabby Teran and Alicia Hansen led off the first inning with a pair of singles for Syracuse but the Gators were able to retire the next three batters to hold the Orange without a run scored.
Florida got on the board quickly in the bottom of the first with a leadoff homerun from Amanda Lorenz. Despite giving up a single to the number two hitter, Miranda Hearn was able to retire the next three batters to limit the damage.
The Gators tacked on another run in the third inning for a 2-0 lead, setting up a four-run fourth inning. Sophie Reynoso led off the inning with a single before being retired on a fielders' choice that left Lorenz at first. Back-to-back walks for Florida set up a grand slam from Kendyl Lindaman for a 6-0 Gator lead.
In the sixth inning, Florida hit a double and triple back-to-back that brought in the final two runs they needed to end the game early.
Hearn (0-3) pitched 2.2 innings where she gave up two runs on three hits with two strikeouts and three walks. Peyton Schnackenberg came in for 2.2 innings of relief, allowing six runs on five hits.
GAME 2 VS. FLORIDA A&M
The Orange's offense came out firing with a single up the middle from Alicia Hansen before Bryce Holmgren hit her first home run of the season for a 2-0 lead. Following the second out of the inning, Hannah Dossett singled up the middle before Alex Acevedo drew a walk. The pair advanced to third and second, respectively, on a wild pitch. Dossett scored on the fourth wild pitch of the inning before Acevedo crossed home on a throwing error by A&M's catcher.
Up 4-0, Syracuse did not rest adding another four runs in the second inning. Hansen led off the inning with a walk before stealing second base. An RBI-double from Neli Casares-Maher scored Hansen while back-to-back singles from Dossett and Acevedo eventually score Casares-Maher. The fourth run of the inning came on a sac fly from Michala Maciolek.
Dandola, who had faced the minimum amount of batters through the first three innings, gave up two hits to leadoff the fourth inning. 'Cuse took the first out of the inning on a fielders' choice and was able to hold the runner at third. A strikeout and groundout allowed the Orange to escape the inning.
The Rattlers would be unable to make contact for another hit in the final inning of the game, clinching the five-inning victory for the Orange.
