SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Orange begin the final stretch of their regular season in Pennsylvania this weekend.
The Syracuse women's hockey team faces College Hockey America opponent Mercyhurst in a two-game series, which begins at 6 p.m. Friday, Feb. 8. The puck drops in the second game at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9.
WHAT'S NEW WITH THE ORANGE
Syracuse enters this weekend's series with a 6-18-2 overall record, including a 6-5-1 mark in College Hockey America play. The Orange are 1-1-1 in their last three games, having earned a 2-1 win over CHA opponent Penn State on Jan. 25.
Most recently, Syracuse lost 5-2 to No. 6 Cornell on Jan. 29. The Orange jumped out to a two-goal advantage in the opening eight minutes of the first period, but the Big Red scored five unanswered goals and held off Syracuse.
Forward Lauren Bellefontaine's play in the month of January did not go unnoticed. She was named CHA Rookie of the Month for January, picking up the monthly award for the third time this season. Bellefontaine had four points (1 goal, 3 assists) in seven games in January.
SCOUTING THE LAKERS
Mercyhurst comes in with a 12-10-3 overall record and sits in second place in the conference standings with an 8-3-0 record.
Two of the Lakers' last five contests have been postponed, but that has not slowed their roll. Mercyhurst won the three games it did play, most recently defeating conference foe RIT, 3-2.
Emma Nuutinen is the team's points leader with 21 (12 goals, 9 assists). Teammate Maggie Knott leads the squad in assists with 15.
Sarah McDonnell, meanwhile, has played in 16 games in net, starting 15. She owns a 2.05 goals against average and is 10-3-1 this season.
ABOUT THE SERIES
Syracuse lost both home games against Mercyhurst earlier this season. The Lakers won the first meeting, 4-2, and followed it up with a 1-0 victory one night later.
The Orange are 6-40-3 all-time versus the Lakers.
WHAT LIES AHEAD
Next weekend, the Orange face RIT in a home-and-home series. The first game is in Rochester, N.Y., with puck drop scheduled for 6 p.m. Friday, Feb. 15.
Syracuse and RIT complete the series inside Tennity Ice Pavilion at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 16.
