ERIE, Pa. - An explosive second period, paired with a last-second, game-winning goal by redshirt senior forward Brooke Avery in the third period, gave the Syracuse women's ice hockey team (7-18-2, 7-5-1 CHA) a thrilling 6-5 victory over College Hockey America opponent Mercyhurst (12-10-3, 9-4-0 CHA) in game one of the weekend series Friday night.
It's Syracuse's first win over the Lakers this season. Mercyhurst swiped both games of the earlier series at Tennity Ice Pavilion.
Avery scored the game-winner off an assist by senior defenseman Allie Munroe. The goal stifled Mercyhurst's comeback attempt. The Lakers had scored two unanswered goals to tie the game up late in the third period.
HOW IT HAPPENED
A pair of first period goals had the Lakers and the Orange knotted up at one heading into the second period. Freshman forward Abby Moloughney had her fifth goal of the season off an assist by sophomore forward Emma Polaski, but the Lakers responded three minutes later off the stick of Emma Nuutinen.
The Lakers jumped on the board in the second period, scoring a goal 13 seconds into the frame. Syracuse was quick to respond off a goal by Avery. The teams then traded blows, tying the game up at three.
That's when Syracuse seized the momentum.
Junior defenseman Allie Olnowich put the Orange ahead 4-3, helped by junior defenseman Logan Hicks' assist on the play. Later in the period, Syracuse drew a hooking penalty, leading to a chance on the power play. Junior forward Anonda Hoppner would capitalize, finding twine with five seconds left in the second period and giving Syracuse the 5-3 lead.
Mercyhurst returned fire in the third, scoring with just under eight minutes left, then following it up with a game-tying goal from Megan Korzack.
Syracuse would not be stopped in this game, though. Avery netted her second goal of the evening late in the final period, giving the lead back to Syracuse with 43 seconds left. That would finish it and stifle the Lakers' comeback.
OF NOTE
Avery (2 goals, 1 assist) and Munroe (3 assists) both set their season highs with three points. Together, they combined for two goals, four assists and nine shots.
Hoppner led the team with five shots on goal, accounting for a quarter of SU's total. She also netted the Orange's only power-play goal of the evening.
Nine different skaters had points in tonight's game, totaling six goals and seven assists.
UP NEXT
The series continues tomorrow afternoon. The puck drops at 1 p.m.
