
Romero Strikes Out 13 to Open OSU/Tulsa Invitational

STILLWATER, OKLA. – A complete game shutout from Alexa Romero highlighted the opening day of the OSU/Tulsa Invitational for Syracuse (5-10) in a 7-0 victory over Seattle (9-7). Syracuse fell 8-0 in five-innings to #21/18 Oklahoma State (10-6) to close out the day.
Romero (2-1) threw a one-hitter, pitching the second straight shutout for the Orange. She pitched seven innings where she allowed just one hit with a season-best 13 strikeouts and two walks. It was the 10th career shutout for Romero, as she ranks fifth all-time at Syracuse.
The Orange had seven different players record hits between the two games including Hannah Dossett, who led 'Cuse with three. Dossett went 3-of-5 in the two games, including a run scored.
Sophie Dandola (3-4) pitched 2.2 innings against Oklahoma were she gave up five runs (zero earned) on five hits with one strikeout and one walk.
Syracuse continues the OSU/Tulsa Invitational tomorrow with a pair of games against Tulsa and RV/#25 Illinois. Game time against Tulsa is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. before a 3:30 first pitch against Illinois.
GAME 1 VS. SEATTLE
With two outs and Bryce Holmgren on first, Neli Casares-Maher came out firing in the first inning, hitting her first career home run over the center field fence for a 2-0 Orange lead. Syracuse continued its offensive success in the second inning as Lailoni Mayfield doubled to left center with two outs. Jessica Skladal reached next on a fielding error by the Seattle pitcher before stealing second base. A triple by Gabby Teran deep into right center field, scored both runners doubling Syracuse's lead, 4-0.
Bryce Holmgren led off the third with a single followed by Dossett's second hit of the day. Toni Martin sent a hard hit single down the first base line that scored Holmgren from second for a 5-0 'Cuse lead. Both Dossett and Martin advanced to third and second, respectively, on the throw home. Dossett scored one batter later on a wild pitch, before Martin concluded the inning reaching home before pinch runner Taylor Lane was caught stealing.
GAME 2 VS. OKLAHOMA STATE
The first inning went quick as both sides were retired in order, before runners threatened in the second. Dossett and Alex Acevedo had back-to-back hits. Dossett ran home on the third single of the inning, hit by Lailoni Mayfield, before being called out on a close play at home plate.
The Cowgirls opened the second inning with a single. 'Cuse was able to retire the next two batters before the lead runner advanced to third on a double down the left field line. Oklahoma State stranded its runners as a groundout ended the inning.
Oklahoma State took advantage of several miscues from the Orange in the third inning after a throwing error allowed the leadoff batter to reach third base. She scored shortly after on a ground out for a 1-0 lead. Following a second out Oklahoma State drew a walk and used back-to-back doubles to score two runs. The first hit of the inning, a single through the left side kept the lineup moving. A single and five walks brought in the rest of the runs for an 8-0 lead.
With two outs in the top of the fourth, Dossett and Acevedo hit back-to-back singles but the Orange were unable to plate a run.
