
#15/18 Kentucky Surpasses Orange

LEXINGTON, KY. – In its final game before opening conference play, Syracuse (8-14) was shutout by #15/18 Kentucky (17-7, 3-0 SEC), 13-0, Wednesday afternoon. The Orange had five hits from five different players, including by Gabby Teran and Lailoni Mayfield.
Kentucky was able to score in every inning, including big first and third frames. The Wildcats had five runs in the opening inning that started with a single and hit by pitch. The second hit of the game put the Cats up early, 1-0, before they loaded the bases with a walk. A two-RBI double and three consecutive walks tacked on three additional runs before Syracuse's defense ended the inning, executing a ground out.
With a new Kentucky pitcher in the circle, Syracuse looked to get its offense going in the third inning. With one out, Alicia Hansen snuck a ball through the middle gap for a single. Bryce Holmgren and Neli Casares-Maher loaded the bases with a walk and hit by pitch, respectively. The Orange could not bring a run home, however, ending the inning with a strikeout and fly out.
Already holding a 7-0 lead, Kentucky opened the third inning with four consecutive hits that put them up, 10-0. The Wildcats would add one more run in the inning on a sac fly.
Syracuse's offense didn't quit in the fourth inning as Mayfield's two-out double went deep into left field. Teran waa called out as the next batter after a bunt bounced off the dirt, making contact with her feet.
Miranda Hearn (0-5) started the game for 'Cuse, pitching through the first out of the game. She was responsible for five runs on three hits. Sophie Dandola pitched the remainder of the first inning and the three final frames. Dandola allowed eight runs (seven earned) on nine hits with one strikeout.
Syracuse looks toward Atlantic Coast Conference play as they open their ACC slate with a three-game series against Louisville. The Orange take on the Cardinals March 15 at 3 p.m. before returning for a 1 p.m. start on Saturday. The series finale is set for Sunday at 12 p.m. All three games are scheduled to be broadcast on ACC Network Extra.
