LOUISVILLE, KY. – A three-run second inning put Louisville ahead early as Syracuse (8-16, 0-2 ACC) could not piece together a run in the 8-0 loss (6 inn.) to the Cardinals. Alex Acevedo and Michala Maicolek led the Orange, each with a hit in the fourth inning.
Syracuse concludes the series tomorrow, looking to avoid the sweep, with a 12 p.m. matchup. The series finale will be broadcast on ACC Network Extra.
The Orange put its leadoff batter, Gabby Teran, on base in the first inning following a walk. A sac bunt from Alicia Hansen moved her to second before a groundout put Teran on third, 60 feet away from scoring. A pop up from Neli Casares-Maher ended the chance of a run as the Cardinals secured the third out.
Syracuse looked to threaten again in the third as Teran drew a two-out walk. After Teran stole second base, Hansen reached on a Cardinal fielding error that advanced Teran to third. A second stolen base of the inning put both runners in scoring position, but a fly out to left field once again thwarted the opportunity.
The Orange's third scoring chance came in the fourth, once again, with two outs. Acevedo doubled to left field which was followed by a single from Maciolek. With runners on the corners, Lailoni Mayfield hit a pop up into foul territory that was roped in by a Cardinal fielder.
After being taken down 1-2-3 in the first inning, Louisville strung together five consecutive hits to open the second, taking a 2-0 lead. A sac fly with the bases loaded tacked on the third run of the inning. The Cardinals kept their lineup moving with four additional runs through the third and fourth inning. Louisville held a 7-0 lead in the sixth inning as Sidney Melton led off with a single through the middle of the infield. After stealing second, Melton advanced to third on a ground out before a blooper single to center field from Rebecca Chung scored the game-ending run.
Sophie Dandola (4-5) pitched the complete game for Syracuse allowing eight runs (seven earned) on 10 hits.
OF NOTE
Hansen's stolen base in the third inning is the 27th in her career, moving her into a tie for seventh all-time at Syracuse.
The Orange snapped a nine-game hitting streak for Louisville's Celene Funke.
