LOUISVILLE, KY. – Three-hits in the top of the eighth, including doubles from Neli Casares-Maher and Hannah Dossett, lifted the Syracuse softball team to a 4-2 victory against Louisville (19-8, 2-1 ACC) Sunday afternoon.
Syracuse (9-16, 1-2 ACC) was led by senior Alicia Hansen who went 2-for-3 at the plate, including a double, run scored, a stolen base and one walk. Her stolen base in the first inning is the 28th of her career, giving her sole possession of seventh place all-time at Syracuse.
Alexa Romero went the distance for the Orange, throwing all eight innings. Romero (5-4) allowed two runs on seven hits with eight strikeouts in her fifth complete game of the season.
The Orange struck early with a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Hansen singled straight back into the pitchers circle before stealing second base on the next pitch. She advanced to third on a throwing error by the catcher before scoring on a second-straight Cardinal error.
Louisville was only able to grab two hits through the first four innings, before doubling their total with two in the fifth inning. Celene Funke opened the frame with a single through the right side before stealing second base. A second consecutive single advanced her to third, before she scored on a sac fly that tied the game, 1-1.
It appeared as if Syracuse had taken the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh when the Orange went ahead 2-1. But Louisville had other ideas, singling up the middle before drawing back-to-back walks that loaded the bases. A fielders' choice scored the tying run, 2-2.
Casares-Maher led off the top of the eighth with a double to the left field wall before scoring on the second-straight extra base hit of the inning, a double from Dossett. Toni Martin's first hit of the day brought in an additional run for the 4-2 lead.
Louisville threatened a game changing run in the bottom of the eighth. With one out, Romero issued the sixth walk of the day. Following a strikeout, Louisville singled through the shortstop hole before Gabby Teran snatched a line drive to end the game.
OF NOTE
Syracuse moves to 2-0 this season in extra-inning games and 6-1 when scoring in the first inning.
Today's game was the 27th complete game of Romero's career, tying her with Jocelyn Cater which is eighth all-time at Syracuse.
The win marked the first for the Orange at Louisville since April 23, 2016 and the fourth all-time at Ulmer Stadium.
