Knutson, Ramirez Earn Wins in #32 Orange's Loss

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The No. 32-ranked Syracuse women's tennis team suffered a 5-2 loss at No. 15 Wake Forest Sunday. The Orange's record moves to 10-6 overall and 3-4 in Atlantic Coast Conference play with the setback.

Senior Gabriela Knutson and junior Miranda Ramirez secured Syracuse's only two points in singles play. Knutson, the No. 42-ranked singles player in the country, defeated Wake Forest's No. 46 Emma Davis in straight sets, while No. 77 Ramirez also cruised to a straight-set victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Orange got off to a promising start in doubles. Syracuse's No. 2 pair of freshman Sofya Treshcheva and sophomore Sofya Golubovskaya quickly dispatched Wake Forest's M.C. Meredith and Eliza Omirou, 6-2, putting the Orange one win away from clinching the doubles point.

The Deacons had other plans, though. Syracuse's top pair of Knutson and Ramirez, ranked No. 70 in the nation, lost 7-6 (10-8) before junior Guzal Yusupova and senior Dina Hegab lost 7-6 (7-5) on court three.

Trailing 1-0 entering singles action, the Orange fired back. Wins by Knutson and Ramirez at courts one and two, respectively, put Syracuse in front, 2-1.

Those two singles wins proved to be Syracuse's only wins of the days. Wake Forest would go on to rally for four straight victories and take the match by the score of 5-2.

WHAT LIES AHEAD
Syracuse is home for its next five duals. The homestand begins Friday, March 29, when the Orange host Florida State at 11 a.m. inside Drumlins.
