
Softball Opens Home Slate Against Niagara

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Following 28 consecutive road games, the Syracuse softball team opens its 2019 home slate Wednesday afternoon against Niagara. The doubleheader is scheduled to start at 4 p.m. with free admission. Both games will also be broadcast on ACC Network Extra.
Syracuse (10-18, 2-4 ACC) comes into its first midweek game following an 8-3 victory over Boston College last Sunday. A pair of home runs by Gabby Teran led the Orange's offense behind a complete game, nine-strikeout performance from Alexa Romero (6-5) in the circle. With three total home runs and three Boston College errors, the Orange scored eight runs on four hits.
The Orange's improved offensive power is paying off with 13 home runs as a team thus far into the season, compared to only two at this point in 2018. Additionally, 'Cuse is averaging 0.29 triples per game, ranking 33rd nationally and fifth in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
Alicia Hansen is batting a team-best .357 in conference play with a .500 slugging percentage and .500 on base percentage. The senior has five hits, two RBIs, two doubles, four walks and four stolen bases through the first two weeks of league play.
Niagara (1-12) picked up its first win of the season last weekend against SIUE. Niagara defeated the Cougars 2-1 after scoring both its runs in the sixth inning. Tara Driver leads the Purple Eagles offense with a .269 batting average that includes seven hits. Syracuse is 18-1 all-time against Niagara, including a pair of victories last season.
The Orange continue their home stand with an ACC series against Notre Dame March 29-31. First pitch on Friday is scheduled for 4 p.m. Saturday has a 1 p.m. start before the series finale Sunday at 12 p.m. Friday and Saturday's games will be broadcast on ACC Network Extra.
