Orange Defeat Great Danes to Extend Winning Streak

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – No. 4/3 Syracuse dominated all aspects of the game and recorded a 19-7 victory against the UAlbany Great Danes (5-5) on Wednesday in the Carrier Dome. Led by a career day from senior Julie Cross, the Orange recorded a season high in goals as seven players posted multi-point performances.

Cross scored a career-high three goals and added a career-high two assists to end the night with a career-best five points. Senior Nicole Levy (4g) and freshman Meaghan Tyrrell (2g, 2a) both tallied four-point games.

"Good team effort," said Syracuse head coach Gary Gait. "Solid, solid team effort. I thought from the beginning we stepped up and did what we needed to do to have success. Again, the defense (was) getting multiple turnovers. After a few missed shots, we got our offense going and our shooting percentage went up. We took better quality shots and put the ball in the net. Overall, good game and good win and we can now turn our focus to Duke."

HOW IT HAPPENED
Syracuse (11-2) got on the board first with a goal from Levy before UAlbany (5-5) responded with a goal from Sam Tortora. Syracuse answered with six straight goals, with redshirt junior Mary Rahal, junior Emily Hawryschuk, Levy, redshirt junior Cara Quimby and freshman Megan Carney all contributing to the scoring run. Syracuse ended the offensive outburst with a 7-1 lead with 13:18 left in the half.

UAlbany's Hailey Carroll broke up the run by finding the back of the net to cut the Great Danes' deficit to five before freshman Sierra Cockerille scored to renew the six-goal lead. UAlbany's Madison Conway responded just over a minute later to make the score 8-3 with 10:04 left, but Syracuse added three more, with redshirt junior Morgan Alexander and Cross joining the scoring ranks. UAlbany and Syracuse would trade one more goal to end the half with a 12-4 'Cuse lead.

Levy picked up right where the team left off in the second half, scoring 1:16 seconds into the frame to extend the Syracuse lead to nine. UAlbany fought back, scoring two of its own to cut the 'Cuse lead down to seven, before the Orange tallied another five unanswered goals to make the score 18-6 with 9:36 left in the game. Each team would add one more before the final horn to end the game with a 19-7 Syracuse victory, extending its winning streak to five.

OF NOTE
Two Orange players tallied the first goals of their career. Sophomore Mackenzie Baker and freshman Georgia Pesot both scored in the second half to contribute to the win.

Syracuse is now 8-0 in games decided by three-or-more goals, 9-0 when recording more shots than its opponent, and 8-0 when winning more draw controls this season.

The Orange led in every statistical category, including shots (33-10), ground balls (19-13) and draw controls (20-7).

Syracuse is back in action on Saturday, March 30 as the Orange travel to Durham, N.C. to face off against No. 12/13 Duke. Opening draw is at noon. The 'Cuse is back at home next Wednesday, April 3 at Christian Brothers Academy in Syracuse when the team faces off against Virginia Tech at 4 p.m. Both games will be broadcast by ACC Network Extra.
