DURHAM, N.C.— Junior Emily Hawryschuk recorded four goals to lead No. 4/3 Syracuse to a 15-14 victory at N. 12/13 Duke on Saturday, March 30. The win improves the Orange's record to 4-1 in one-goal games this season and extends their winning streak to six.
Â
"It's a good balance and team chemistry and grit" said Syracuse head coach Gary Gait of his team's ability to win close games. "We never give up. We're up (in this game), they fight back, we're up, they fight back. We held on at the end and did what we needed to – defense got the stops, Asa (Goldstock) made the saves when we needed them and we got the victory. We're pretty happy with that."
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
In a game that featured eight ties, neither team led by more than three goals. Duke (8-4, 2-2) scored first in the second half to go up 10-9, but Syracuse (12-2, 4-1) answered with three straight goals to retake the lead. Sophomore Sam Swart scored an unassisted goal before freshman Meaghan Tyrrell converted on a free-position attempt. Swart completed her third hat trick of the season with a free-position goal that gave the Orange a 12-10 advantage with 19:45 remaining.
Â
The squads traded goals before back-to-back tallies by Tyrrell and Hawryschuk gave Syracuse its largest lead of the game at 15-12 with 5:03 on the clock.
Â
The Blue Devils wouldn't go away and cut the deficit to one, 15-14, with 1:50 on the clock. Duke won the ensuing draw, giving it one last chance to tie the game. But the Blue Devils turned it over and the Orange ran out the clock for their sixth win against a ranked opponent this season.
Â
A back-and-fourth first half featured seven ties as neither team could pull away. Hawryschuk and Tyrrell scored in the first five minutes to give the Orange an early lead, but Duke answered with back-to-back goals to even the score at 2-2. The squads traded goals before the Blue Devils scored two straight to take an 8-6 lead with 6:12 on the clock. Syracuse responded with goals from senior Nicole Levy and freshman Sierra Cockerille to again tie the score. Both teams found the back of the net in the final minute as they went to the locker rooms tied at 9-9.
