Orange Earn First Victory Over Irish Since 2016
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – An early pitchers duel turned into an offensive explosion for the Syracuse softball team as they walked-off against Notre Dame (19-11, 3-4 ACC) for a 9-1, six-inning victory Friday evening at Skytop Stadium. The win is the fourth-consecutive for Syracuse (13-18, 3-4 ACC) and the first over the Irish since 2016.
The three-game series between Syracuse and Notre Dame continues tomorrow. First pitch in the opening game is scheduled for 1 p.m. Admission is free in addition to the ACC Network Extra broadcast.
"I think it was definitely impressive," head coach Shannon Doepking said. "Notre Dame is a really good team and I think any time you can get a win like that it is nice to see. We've always said this team is super talented, we just haven't put all the pieces together yet. I think what you got to see today was some of those pieces coming together."
Alicia Hansen led the way offensively, batting in a team-best three runs. Hansen ended the day 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a double. Lailoni Mayfield continued her hot streak with two hits, a walk and an RBI, including the walk-off triple. In the circle, Alexa Romero pitched her 10th complete game of the season going the full six innings. Romero (8-5) allowed one run on four hits with seven strikeouts.
After taking a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fifth, the Orange's offense did not slow down, piecing together a seven-run sixth inning. Following a lead off out, Gianna Carideo and Jessica Skladal recorded back-to-back singles. A third consecutive hit by Teran scored pinch runner, Taylor Lane, before Bryce Holmgren drew a walk, loading the bases. The lineup kept moving as Alex Acevedo doubled down the right field line for an 8-1 Syracuse lead.
Notre Dame re-entered its starting pitcher, Payton Tidd, who left the game following the fifth inning. Tidd could not stop the 'Cuse momentum as Mayfield's triple scored the ninth-run of the day, capping off the eight-run victory.
Notre Dame's lone run of the game came in the third inning. The Fighting Irish strung together a hit and a walk, setting up an opportunity with runners on first and second with one out. Caitln Brooks singled to drive home the run for Notre Dame, giving them a 1-0 lead. Romeo settled back in, pitching her way out of a bases loaded jam to end the inning. Romero held the Irish to just one hit through the remaining three innings of the game.
