FORT COLLINS, COLO. – An offensive explosion led the Syracuse softball team to a 15-3, five-inning victory over Wagner (2-7) Friday afternoon. Syracuse (6-11) scored 15 runs, the most runs scored since April 13, 2016.
In the first all-time meeting between the two programs, the Orange recorded 16 hits, led by three each from Gabby Teran, Neli Casares-Maher and Toni Martin. The hits are the most since Syracuse has notched since hitting 18 against Boston College on April 16, 2014. Eight of the nine 'Cuse players had at least one hit, while all nine batters reached base.
Syracuse had a plethora of career-high performances including a career-high four RBIs from Casares-Maher. As a team, the Orange had 14 new or tied career-highs.
The dominant offensive performance was backed up in the circle with Alexa Romero's third complete game of the season. Romero pitched five innings where she allowed three runs (one earned) on three hits with nine strikeouts and two walks.
The Orange's second game of the day was postponed due to a weather delay earlier in the morning. Updated schedule information will be available at cuse.com.
Casares-Maher, who hit her first career home run last weekend, wasted no time putting the Orange on the board with a two-run homer in the first inning. Syracuse, who scored at least two runs in every inning, put up three in the second inning with a three-run bomb from Martin.
Bryce Holmgren drew a hit by pitch to lead off the third inning before a double from Casares-Maher put runners on second and third. A two-RBI single from Dossett scored two additional runs for a 7-3 'Cuse lead.
Syracuse added six additional insurance runs in the top of the fourth, highlighted by Alex Acevedo's first career home run. Martin kicked off the inning with a double down the left field line, before a bunt single from Teran advanced her to third. Hansen laid down the second-straight bunt single, loading the bases. Casares-Maher and Dossett hit back-to-back doubles before Acevedo laid down the dagger with her two-run shot.
OF NOTE
Syracuse hit three home runs, the most since March 10, 2017 against NC State where the Orange put up four.
Holmgren, who was hit by pitch twice, now holds the Syracuse career record for hit by pitches with 35. She did so in 112 games, 96 less than Lacey Kohl who previously held the record.
