FORT COLLINS, COLO. – The Syracuse softball team had another strong offensive day, splitting a pair of games against Wagner and Colorado State on Saturday. Syracuse (7-12) topped Wagner for the second-consecutive game, 7-3, before its rally fell short against Colorado State, 8-6.
Alicia Hansen and Toni Martin led the Orange with three hits each. Hansen and Martin both hit a homerun against Colorado State while Martin racked up five RBIs in the two games.
Sophie Dandola (4-4) pitched her fourth complete game of the season, going all seven innings against Wagner. She allowed three runs (two earned) on eight hits with four walks and one strikeout.
GAME 1 VS. WAGNER
Syracuse did its damage in the second inning for an early 4-0 lead. Back-to-back singles from Neli Casares-Maher and Hannah Dossett opened the frame. Alex Acevedo drew the first walk of the game, loading the bases for the Orange with no outs. Gonzalez hit into a ground out but advanced all runners, including Casares-Maher who scored the first run of the game. A double from Martin added two additional runs, before Gabby Teran's sac bunt brought in the fourth run of the inning.
'Cuse put up two additional runs following three hits in the third putting them ahead 6-0. After giving up two runs in the sixth inning to Wagner, the Orange came back at the bottom of the frame with a double from Michala Maciolek. Skladal, pinch ran for Maciolek, scored one batter later on a triple from Mrtin.
Wagner had one more opportunity to challenge in the top of the seventh. The Seahawks lead batter reached safely following a dropped ball by the 'Cuse first baseman. A fielders' choice and pair of hits brought a runner across home plate but the Orange tagged the final out at home.
GAME 2 VS. COLORADO STATE
The Orange put themselves ahead early with a first-inning RBI single from Bryce Holmgren but couldn't stay up for long. Colorado State tied the game in the second with back-to-back doubles before taking the go-ahead lead in the bottom of the third with a solo home run.
Colorado State knocked open the game with a six-run fourth inning. After retiring the first batter of the frame, a Syracuse fielding error put a runner on base. Four hits, an error and a walk brought home the additional runs for the Rams for their 8-1 lead.
Syracuse showed its fight in the final two innings, cutting Colorado State's lead in half, 8-4, thanks to Hansen's first home run of the season. The second home run of the game came on a two-run shot from Martin in the sixth. Down 8-6 and with two outs in the seventh inning, Hansen used everything she had to keep the game alive. A triple to right center put the game tying run at home plate, but 'Cuse could not find an answer.
