
Softball Concludes Colorado State Classic

FORT COLLINS, COLO. – The Syracuse softball team concluded the Colorado State Classic Sunday afternoon, splitting a pair of games against Dayton and Colorado State. Syracuse (8-12) held off a Dayton comeback attempt, 7-6, before falling in five innings to Colorado State, 8-0.
Alexa Romero (4-3) pitched four shutout innings, allowing two hits while striking out nine. Sophie Dandola picked up her first save of the season after three innings of relief. The sophomore allowed six runs (three earned)on seven hits with three walks and two strikeouts.
Michala Maciolek led the Orange with a 2-of-3 performance against the Flyers, where she raked in four RBIs and a run scored. Maciolek's two doubles moved her to four on the weekend, doubling her career totals.
GAME 1 VS. DAYTON
Romero retired nine of Dayton's first 10 batters in order, including eight strikeouts. Dayton picked up two hits on a double to right center in the third and a two-out single through the left side in the fourth.
The Orange offense backed up Romero's performance in the circle, taking a 4-0 lead in the second inning. Maciolek kick started the scoring with a two-RBI double before a triple from Gabby Teran scored Maciolek and Martin, who had walked one batter prior.
Syracuse held a 4-1 lead into the fifth inning where singles from Neli Casares-Maher, Hannah Dossett and Maciolek jumped the Orange out to a 7-1 lead.
Down to its final two outs, Dayton used two doubles to score four runs that pulled them within one of 'Cuse. The Orange were able to secure the final out, following a ground ball to the second baseman, for its third win of the weekend.
GAME 2 VS. COLORADO STATE
Colorado State's offense wasted little time with a two-run home run in the first inning. The Rams took a 4-0 lead by the end of the frame with a 2-RBI single. The lead grew for Colorado State in the second inning. The Rams' leadoff batter reached on a hit by pitch, before a double down the left field line put runners on second and third. A sac fly followed by a Syracuse throwing error put Colorado State ahead 6-0.
The Rams' final run of the game came on their second two-run home run of the day, this time in the third inning.
Alex Acevedo recorded the Orange's lone two hits of the game with doubles in the third and fifth inning.
Syracuse's three errors proved to be costly as only four of Colorado State's runs were earned. Miranda Hearn pitched four innings for 'Cuse allowing eight runs (four earned) on five hits. She tied a career-high five strikeouts.

The Orange travel to Lexington, Ky. where they will take on #18/22 Kentucky on Wednesday, March 13. The game is scheduled for 2 p.m.
