SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Two members of the Syracuse women's rowing team are participating in the USRowing Under-23 Selection Camp this summer. Megan Varcoe has been invited as part of the sweep camp, while Arianna Lee is invited to the sculling camp. Lee made the U23 National Team last summer and competed on the international stage representing both Syracuse University and the U.S.A.
"Training and supporting our athletes who want to challenge themselves to row on the national team is an important piece of Syracuse women's rowing," first-year head coach Luke McGee said. "We have a history of producing Under-23, Senior and Olympic team rowers, and we are excited for both Meg and Arianna to earn an invitation to this year's USA Under-23 Selection Camp. They have both worked extremely hard and it will be fun to watch them take their rowing to the next level."
Lee is no stranger to international competition. She was a USA representative at the 2015 World Rowing Junior Championships in Rio de Janiero, Brazil. She also won her final at the 2015 US Junior Trials with partner Margaret Dawson and placed second in the 4+ at the 2015 USRowing Youth Nationals. Most recently, Lee was a part of Team USA's 4+ crew that placed sixth at the U23 World Championships in Poznan, Poland, in 2018.
"I'm thrilled to have been invited back again this year," Lee said. "There are a lot of new women also attending, and I'm excited to compete with and against them to make the fastest boat possible for the U23 Worlds. Meg and I will be attending different versions of the camp, so we won't be direct competition for each other, but it's always nice to have a familiar face around.
I've seen Meg putting in the work this year, and she's rightfully earned her spot at camp," Lee added. "I'll be cheering her on every step of the way."
This is Varcoe's first invitation to the national camp.
"I am super excited to be invited," Varcoe said. "It is definitely an incredible honor to represent the US and to just have the opportunity to try out for the World's boat."
This season, both Lee and Varcoe are members of Syracuse's varsity eight.
"I think having her [Arianna] in the boat with me now at Syracuse has definitely showed me what it takes to be a mature rower," Varcoe added." "I think from her learning in her own experiences has definitely impacted my life."
Varcoe joins Duke's Shannon Tierney as the ACC's lone representatives at the sweep camp, while Lee joins Virginia's Georgia Gray and Emily Ashton in the sculling camp. Kevin Sauer, Virginia's head women's rowing coach, will lead both groups.
At the conclusion of camp, rowers will be selected to represent the United States as members of the U23 national team to compete at the Under-23 World Championships July 24-28 in Bradenton, Fla.
