ATLANTAÂ - With seven strikeouts Friday night against Georgia Tech, junior Alexa Romero moved into second all-time at Syracuse with 581 career strikeouts as the Orange dropped a hard fought battle to the Yellow Jackets, 5-4.
Â
Alex Acevedo and Hannah Dossett led Syracuse (20-26, 8-11 ACC) offensively as both went 2-for-4. Dossett had a pair of doubles for two RBIs while Acevedo scored a run. Romero (10-13) pitched her 15th complete game of the season, allowing five runs on six hits.
Â
Syracuse continues the series tomorrow at 1 p.m. against Georgia Tech (28-23, 9-10 ACC) before concluding Sunday at 10 a.m. Both games will be broadcast on ACC Network Extra.Â
Â
Lailoni Mayfield led the Orange off with a solo home run in the second inning, but the Orange weren't able to hold onto the lead for long as Georgia Tech recorded three runs in the bottom half of the frame. With two outs, the Yellow Jackets loaded the bases on a pair of walks and a hit by pitch before back-to-back RBI singles put them ahead 3-1.
Â
Syracuse cut into the lead in the third inning, 3-2, as Alicia Hansen hit the second home run of the day for the Orange. Tech answered once again with a solo homer of their own in the bottom of the third.
Â
After leaving the bases loaded in the fourth, the Orange's offense found its stride in the fifth inning with a pair of runs that tied the game, 4-4. Alexis Kaiser and Acevedo led off the frame with consecutive singles through the left side before a fly out from Lailoni Mayfield moved the pair of second and third. Dossett's RBI double scored both to tie the game 4-4.
Â
Neither team got much in the sixth inning as the only base runner came for Georgia Tech with a lead off walk. Acevedo led off the seventh for 'Cuse with her second hit of the day but the Orange were unable to move her as the following three batters were retired on fly balls.
Â
With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, a walk put the go-ahead run for Tech on first base before a pair of hits would give the Yellow Jackets the walk off victory.
