ATLANTA – Despite coming back from a 7-5 deficit, the Syracuse softball team was unable to defeat Georgia Tech Saturday afternoon as the Yellow Jackets took an 8-7 victory. Syracuse (20-27, 8-12 ACC) tied the game with a pair of runs in the sixth and seventh inning, but could not silence Georgia Tech (29-23, 10-10 ACC) in the bottom of the seventh as they hit back-to-back singles to score the game winning run.
The series concludes with a game three tomorrow at 10 a.m. The game will be broadcast on ACC Network Extra.
Alex Acevedo led the Orange, going 3-for-4 on the day with one RBI while Neli Casares-Maher followed with a 2-for-4 performance at the plate. For the third consecutive game, the Orange hit at least two home runs as Alicia Hansen and Alexis Kaiser each notched one. With her two runs scored, Hansen moved into second all-time at Syracuse with 131 career runs scored.
Miranda Hearn earned the start for Syracuse, pitching the first three innings. Hearn recorded one out in the fourth before Sophie Dandola saw her first appearance in nearly a month. Hearn continued her steady performance as of late, allowing six runs (two earned) on four hits with four strikeouts. Dandola faced 15 batters in nearly three innings pitched and allowed one run on four hits.
Syracuse wasted no time putting up a run in the first inning after Hansen drew a walk and moved to second on a ground out. A single by Acevedo scored Hansen from second for the 1-0 lead. Georgia Tech would have an answer in the bottom of the inning scored a pair of runs on a fielding error and wild pitch for their first lead of the game, 2-1.
In a back-and-forth game, Hansen catapulted the Orange back in front, 4-2, with a three-run home run in the third inning. Georgia Tech wasted no time, tying it up in the bottom of the frame. After drawing a two-out walk and hit by pitch, the Yellow Jackets doubled down the left field line to score both runs and tie the game 4-4. Kaiser responded, leading off the fourth inning for Syracuse with a solo home run.
After Georgia Tech added three runs in the fourth and fifth inning, Syracuse faced a 7-5 deficit heading into the sixth inning. Casares-Maher hit a one-out double to left center before a single by Gianna Carideo scored Jessica Skladal, who pinch ran for Casares-Maher, to cut into the Yellow Jackets lead. Acevedo came up big again for the Orange in the seventh with a single through the right side. With two outs, Alexis Kaiser was able to safely reach first base on a Georgia Tech fielding error that moved the pinch runner, Logan Paul, to third base. Casares-Maher fought through a long at bat to single up the middle, tying the game 7-7.
Alexa Romero entered the game in the bottom of the seventh for the Orange. Georgia Tech worked several full counts, including a leadoff walk followed by a single that moved the runner to third. A hard hit ball into right field would be enough to end the game with an 8-7 lead for the Yellow Jackets.
