SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The ninth-ranked Syracuse Orange men's rowing team came from behind in the final 500 meters to defeat No. 10 Dartmouth to win the Packard Cup for the second-straight year Saturday morning at Ten Eyck Memorial Boathouse. Watch the full replay of Sunday's races on ACCN Extra or via the WatchESPN app.
It marks the 30th time the Orange have won the cup since it was first contested in 1960. Syracuse has won the annual race between the Orange and Big Green three times in the last four years.
"The last four years the Packard Cup has been won by the visiting team," head coach Dave Reischman said. "And man, Dartmouth didn't go down easy in that race. It was a hell of a race and Dartmouth made sure we earned it. Congratulations to my guys for keeping some poise in the middle of the race when Dartmouth pressed out and nice job of delivery in obviously the last 300 meters of the race."
As the varsity eight came up the channel and passed by a dock full of fans, the Orange surged, erasing a three-seat deficit to cross the line in 5:51.4 beating Dartmouth (5:52.2) by less than a second.
In the 2V8+, Dartmouth led most of the race and held on to win by four seconds clocking 6:00.6 while the Orange finished in 6:04.4.
Syracuse's 3V8+ trailed with 500 meters to go but came up short after a final rush to cross the line in 6:01.1, just .4 seconds behind Dartmouth.
In the final race of the day, Dartmouth cruised to victory by open water with a time of 6:10.2 while 'Cuse crossed the finish line in 6:17.9.
