RALEIGH, N.C. – A complete-game, 10 strikeout performance from Alexa Romero highlighted the opening day of the series against NC State (21-17, 3-8 ACC) as Syracuse (16-20, 5-6 ACC) split a pair of games in the doubleheader. Syracuse took the first game behind Romero (10-5), 5-2, before the Wolfpack evened the series with a 7-2 win in game two.
Romero pitched all seven innings of game one while picking up her tenth win of the season. She allowed two runs on two hits with just two walks before retiring the final 16 batters of the game.
Alex Acevedo led the Orange in game two going 3-for-5 with two walks and two runs scored. In the first game, Jessica Skladal also tallied three hits.
Syracuse concludes the three-game series tomorrow with a 1 p.m. first pitch.
GAME 1
Both teams plated a run in the first inning, before NC State took its only lead of the game, 2-1, in the bottom of the second with a solo home run.
The defining inning for the Orange came in the fourth, where they scored four runs on four hits for the 5-2 lead. Acevedo and Lailoni Mayfield hit back-to-back singles before each advancing on a wild pitch. Acevedo avoided the tag at home to score on a fielders' choice. A single by Alexis Kaiser scored the second run of the inning before Gabby Teran's double cleared the base paths and gave 'Cuse the 5-2 lead.
Romero would shut down the Wolfpack, retiring the final 16 batters of the game.
GAME 2
NC State scored the first five runs of the game in the opening two innings. The Wolfpack opened the game with back-to-back walks before a single and groundout put the first two runs on the board. NC State expanded their lead to 5-0 in the second inning following a leadoff double by Angie Rizzi. A sac fly in addition to two walks and a second double of the inning pushed across the other three runs.
An additional run came for the Wolfpack in the bottom of the fourth after an RBI-double from Brigette Nordberg. A solo homerun scored the seventh run of the game for NC State.
Syracuse's only scoring effort came in the fourth on a two-run homer by Kaiser. Miranda Hearn pitched the complete game allowing seven runs on seven hits with five strikeouts and five walks.
