Seven Syracuse runners have been named to the 2019 All-ACC indoor Track and Field Academic teams, the ACC announced on Thursday. Five Orange men received the honor, while two from the women's team are represented.
The honors continue a long string of academic success for the program, which has seen at least one of its programs highlighted with the USTFCCCA All-Academic Team honor for cross country and/or track and field since 2009.
This year's honors were earned by sophomore Noah Affolder, senior Illiass Aouani, junior Aidan Tooker, freshman Michael Phillips and junior Matt Moore who represented the men's team, while junior Rachel Bonner and freshman Laura Dickinson were named to the women's. All-seven selections were also All-ACC performers.
Syracuse's five selection for the men is tied with Virginia Tech for the second most in the ACC, only behind Notre Dame, which had seven selections.
This is the third consecutive selection for both Aouani and Tooker, after receiving the honor in 2017 and 2018. This is the second selection for Moore, while Affolder and Phillips are named to the team for the first time. On the women's side, this is the first selection for both Bonner and Dickinson.
Affolder, a health and exercise science major, concluded his indoor season with a 3k/5k double at the ACC Championships. He turned in a top-10 performance in each, headlined by a sixth-place finish in the 3000-meters.
A civil engineering major, Aouani also doubled in the two distance events, making his way on the podium in both. He was ACC runner-up in the 3000-meter run, before taking bronze in the 5000-meters. He's continued that success into the outdoor slate, setting the ACC 10,000-meter record at the Stanford Invite this spring.
Bonner placed fourth in the 3000-meter run, earning Second Team All-ACC honors for the first time in her collegiate career. She is majoring in biology.
Dickinson kicked off her first ACC Indoor Track and Field Championships in a big way, with two All-ACC performances. Enrolled in the David B. Falk School of Sport and Human Dynamics, Dickinson finished sixth in the 3k in a personal-best time, before placing fourth in the 5k at the ACC Championships.
Moore majors in communications and rhetorical studies and took bronze at the ACC Indoor Track and Field Championship in the 60-meter hurdles.
Another communications and rhetorical studies major is Phillips, a freshman who arrived in a big way with a fifth-place finish in the mile at the ACC Championships. He also turned in a ninth-place finish in the 3k.
Tooker placed fourth in the mile and 10th in the 3k at the ACC Championships. The communication and rhetorical studies major has been on five All-ACC track teams in his three-year career to date.
Paige Stoner, the ACC Champion in the 5000-meters and CoSIDA Academic All-American was not enrolled this fall and not eligible for the award.
Every member of the All-ACC Academic Team earned either All-America or All-ACC status this season and maintained a 3.0 GPA or better. The ACC Honor Roll, which recognizes each conference student-athlete with a grade point average of 3.0 for the current academic year, will be released in July.
The Orange continue their outdoor slate at the Payton Jordan Invitational at Stanford University this weekend.
