SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse Orange fell behind 1-0 in the top of the first and weren't able to come back, dropping the opening game of the weekend, 8-0, in six-innings to #5/6 Florida State Friday evening.
Â
The series continues with a 1 p.m. game on Saturday. The Orange will recognize the programs four seniors, Hannah Dossett, Alicia Hansen, Bryce Holmgren and Logan Paul prior to the start of the game. Admission is free in addition to the game being broadcast on ACC Network Extra.
Â
Bryce Holmgren snapped the no-hit bid for Florida State's Meghan King in the bottom of the sixth with a single through the gap to center field. The Orange had its strongest scoring opportunity with a hit by pitch to Gabby Teran before Hansen reached base on a hard hit ball to shortstop. With the bases loaded, Syracuse (21-29, 8-14 ACC) was unable to plate a run after grounding into a double play that ended the game.
Â
"Meghan King is a great pitcher and we knew that coming in," said head coach Shannon Doepking. "We took a lot of pitches and allowed her to get ahead and live on the inner part of the plate. We knew what was coming and we weren't able to make those adjustments."
Â
Florida State (46-8, 17-5 ACC) took their eight straight win as the offense took an early 1-0 lead with a walk and RBI single in the first inning. The Seminoles scored at least one run in each of the first four innings, including a three-run fourth inning. Meghan King held it down in the circle for the Seminoles, not allowing a base runner until the fifth inning. King (25-5) pitched a full five innings and through the first out of the sixth, allowing one hit with four strikeouts.
Â
Miranda Hearn (3-7) went the opening three innings for 'Cuse, allowing five runs on six hits with three strikeouts. Sophie Dandola entered in relief, also going three innings. Dandola allowed three runs (two earned) on six hits with one strikeout. Â
