Nicholas Tavares '19 and incoming transfer Nicholas Kohl will be representing the Orange at the upcoming U23 World Rowing Championships in Sarasota, Fla., this week. Tavares, a staple on the Syracuse varsity eight, makes his second appearance with the Canadian eight, while Kohl joins Italy's four after racing with the eight last year.Â
"This summer, our crew has been lucky enough to train alongside the Canadian Senior National Team's eight, which will represent Canada in the next Olympics," Tavares said. "We train during the top-level workouts with the same intensity and quality, being pushed harder each day by the best athletes in the world. Our eight feels confident going to the U23 World Championships. Training and racing beside our seniors, who are a top crew in the world, has given us the experience of racing other elite eights. We won't be caught off guard and we know what to expect and how to handle ourselves internally to achieve our full potential. This is the most powerful and fastest U23 eight Rowing Canada has assembled and we are excited to put down fast times."
Tavares and his Canadian teammates take the water on Thursday, July 25, for the eight heats which race at 9:50 a.m. and 9:55 a.m. No stranger to international competition, Tavares was a member of last year's U23 Canadian eight crew in Poland where they finished fifth overall. He also represented Canada at the U23 World Championships in 2016 as a member of the coxed four and was twice a member of the U19 Canadian Junior Team.
Kohl also raced at the U23 World Championships with Italy's eight, placing seventh overall alongside current Orange teammate Jacopo Bertone. Kohl and his Italian teammates begin with the heats at 10:30 a.m. and 10:35 a.m. on Wednesday, July 24.Â
