Syracuse, N.Y. – Eleven members of the Syracuse University women's rowing team were recognized by the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) for their performances on and off the water for the 2019 season while two earned All-America honors.
"I am proud of the nine CRCA Scholar-Athlete award winners from our team," said head coach Luke McGee. "The team commitment to excellence in the classroom and on the water is inspiring and illustrates how Syracuse is providing the full experience for our student-athletes."
Sophomore Meg Varcoe and graduate student Sydney Michalak both received Pocock All-America Honorable Mention recognition by the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association. Both Varcoe and Michalak helped lead the Orange's varsity eight to a second place finish at the ACC/Big Ten Duel and a third place finish at the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Championships this spring.
The CRCA recognized nine Syracuse oarswomen, including Christie Castorino, Sarah Crummey, Christine Habjan, Josie Kiesel, Arianna Lee, Sydney Michalak, Rachel Pierce, Zoe Preston, and Rebecca Spraggins, as Scholar-Athletes.
In order to qualify for CRCA Scholar-Athlete honors, a student-athlete must meet all eligibility rules, compete in a minimum for 75 percent of the team's spring races and hold a 3.5 cumulative grade point average or higher for her career through the fall semester of the current school year.
Syracuse's nine Scholar-Athlete selections are tied for third-most in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
