SYRACUSE — Longtime Syracuse tennis associate head coach and 2019 ITA Northeast Regional Assistant Coach of the Year Shelley George is stepping down from the team and retiring from coaching, head coach Younes Limam announced today. George's tenure with 'Cuse will officially conclude at the end of the month.
Â
"I have been blessed to work with Shelley for the last five years and experience her care and commitment as a coach and a person," Limam said. "Syracuse Tennis accomplished much during Shelley's tenure and I want to thank her for all she did to elevate the program. There were many first-time accomplishments under her guidance because of her relentless and never-tiring work."
Â
"I am very thankful for the opportunity that Syracuse University has given me to coach here for the past 13 years," George said. "It has been a journey well worth taking and I have mixed emotions about retiring from the program, but I know it's what's best for me and my family at this time. I have enjoyed working with some great people over the years, and I gave my heart and soul to my players. I became a better person and coach with this opportunity and I will miss being in the battle with the Orange."
Â
George has roamed the sidelines for the Orange tennis program for each of the past 12 seasons, bringing with her an abundance of coaching experience that has helped the program grow exponentially over the last decade and resulted in numerous accolades. With George's assistance, the Orange saw Gabriela Knutson and Miranda Ramirez earn All-American Honors, made three NCAA Tournament appearances, witnessed Sofya Golubovskaya and Sofya Treshcheva become the 2018 ITA NE Regional Champions, and claimed 13 All-Conference nods.
Â
Academically, Syracuse has earned two ITA All-Academic Team awards and eight ITA Scholar-Athlete awards. The Orange also saw Emily Harmen collect Academic All-American honors while also earning Academic All-District honors alongside Komal Safdar. George's tenure with 'Cuse was topped off this spring when she was named ITA Regional Assistant Coach of the Year.
Â
A past section president within the United States Tennis Association (USTA), George was selected as one of six Division I coaches to receive the 2012 Eastern Sectional Campus & Community Outreach Award for her service within the Syracuse community. During the summer months, George participated in "Orange Blocks," free tennis clinics given in the Syracuse City School District to teach tennis fundamentals, develop skills, and offer prizes to students in the community. She also hosted Community Tennis Night in 2012, an event meant to kick off the USTA Adult League which worked to get more than 400,000 players across the nation at all levels to continue to play tennis in a team format.
Â
A national search for George's replacement will begin immediately.
Â
The Orange are coming off a 14-12 season where they earned first round victories in both the ACC and NCAA tournaments.
